Hello,
New guy here. I was cleaning out my Great Uncle's house, and i found what appears to be an old bat of some type, or at least it looks like a bat to me.... It's got an oval barrel, but a knobby end. It's 28" long, I have yet to get it on my postage scale for a weight. No markings, just a lotta marks so it looks old to me. Could this be a town ball bat, or is it just some kind of old handle?? I Googled "old baseball bat" which led me to this site. Hoping to get some answers. Thanks in advance! ~Graham ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It’s gotta be a handle. The “business end” looks totally like an axe or pick handle.

I’m not so sure...
Looks just like other Massachusetts style Town Bats I’ve seen, with that type of knob and the 2 flattened sides of the Barrel. I would run it be Mears, if you really want to know, and/or are interested in selling it. Best of luck! |

It's similar to the mass style bat but most likely a railroad brake handle . Sometimes initials of the railroad are faintly stamped into the wood. These do however, certainly get sold as mass bats

At 28 inches long, is it too short for a Mass bat?

I think that length was pretty typical for those, as they were far smaller than standard baseball bats. Hunt Auctions has had a few quite similar to this, if you have the patience to scour their “completed auctions”.

I've got two very similar to this that I bought for my brother the baseball bat guy. He is still torn between baseball bat or something else
similar knob, similar oval shape I'm not sure what the length of his are. He's out of town but will ask him when he returns on Monday. I took a chance when I purchase them, because it looked like baseball bats to me. If you run out of ideas or motivation to look further and prove, let me know what you want to sell it for and I will react please PM me Bruce Minneapolis |
