Aside from the lucky few who need bank vaults for their collections, is there a recommendation for a case or other storage mechanism for PSA graded cards? Do people often use waterproof/fireproof type cases or are those more gimmicky? Note that I don't plan to travel with the cards or move them much, but something that is somewhat portable would be preferable, beyond mere cardboard boxes. I've seen a few but not sure if some are better built/more reliable than others.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts. |

You could get a gun locker (safe) and place the storage boxes of cards in the gun locker. It may not be a safe deposit box but at least there's some security.
Problem with safe deposit boxes is that you can get separation anxiety.... could you imagine only being able to visit your T206 Honus Wagner during bank hours? Also, I'm pretty sure that banks don't offer insurance on the contents of a safe deposit box.

Safes can be tricky too because they sometimes trap condensation and we all know what moisture does to paper.

I've got my meager slab collection in Sentry Fire safes - series #1100 / 1110 / 1170. The former two hold about 60 slabs, the latter is bigger and holds many more. All are locking and quite heavy to deter a walk-in / walk-off burglar. Not sure about the water safety aspect. I am more concerned with theft. Home Depot or Lowe's carry them. Run about $25 for the smaller size. If you belong to Costco, they frequently have their gun safes on sale for about $600. Way more safe than I need but probably better security.

I have a major safe in home. But I also have three different SKB cases, and I love them. They really are for guns or photo equipment, etc. but you can do whatever you want with the foam on the inside and they make great card carrying and storing cases. Not very expensive either. I highly recommend.

Something to consider - Safes bring attention to valuables. Depending on your collection, something more inconspicuous might actually be safer. Most burglars want to get in and out quickly. They're going to focus on the obvious items of value. A safe would certainly slow them down. But, if they're familiar with the home (acquaintance) and are prepared for the safe, you might still be out of luck. There are pros and cons either way.

I have a few of those Sentry's too but my collection outgrew them. Used safes can be had fairly cheaply if you look around.

I always put silica gel packets in every container that holds my cards.
