Default Watch out for this Scammer

This guy has joined the site under multiple handles since at least Nov. Today , the latest back to back…..he doesn’t even read the posts as I’m not looking for one of the cards, how this guy keeps joining is beyond me , but he definitely wins the prize for Asshat of the new year
He will always start his note with “My old man”
I’m hoping the powers that be can permanently block him as it is just a waste of time dealing with him

I've said this before and I will say this again: Leon needs to change the registration process. Make it so that you need at least two hobby references in order to get in. It's like when you want to join an auction house and they will ask for references before letting you in.

I wonder if there is a way to capture the IP address when people register, and then if they are scammers, or banned for any reason, maybe the IP could be blocked from re-registering.

Not sure if that's doable, and it wouldn't be foolproof, but it would sure help.

They aren’t being approved in the first place. Forget about references. Approximately 98% of the scammers don't register. They get in through a hole in Tapatalk. Maybe we should get rid of it and the scammers will be gone, for the most part?

We capture Ip addresses but scammers have an almost infinite number of them... (probably)

We're gone from "Hey mate, my old man/uncle" to "Hey man, my old man/uncle."

The scammer(s) are evolving and it's only taken a few years to learn this isn't an Australia-heavy community.

Just wait until they start using AI agents.

Wait, did you shut down registrations on tapatalk like I showed was likely possible and they are still getting in? Was that done and there is another loophole allowing this?

IMG_7763.jpegWell, let me point out, on this current scam I’ve posted, it clearly says they used tapatalk…..so if that is the Trojan horse to get in and it can be shut down, I’d do it!

Won't work cause' you can change your IP address as many times as you want if you are running a VPN.

Stopping people from registering on Tapatalk I'm all for. Stopping it from being used by members altogether is a horrible idea.

According to this thread it is as simple as making it so admins have to accept registration through Tapatalk. The post is from 2019 but it's worth looking into.

This is what the scammers would see:

Like someone mentioned earlier in the thread, wait until AI fully gets its dirty finger in it all.

Tapatalk and other companies really need to be proactive in figuring out how to combat bots and the like.

Someone, also, mentioned IP addresses earlier, and it’s not like it once was, especially with phones. Almost every time someone logs in or connects anymore the get assigned a new IP on the cellular network. IP blocking works great for static computer login where your landline home internet pretty much keeps the same IP, but with so many using cellular options and VPN’s, it becomes virtually impossible to block the IP.

Leon has done a great job over the years, but it’s just becoming so much harder for small outfits to keep a handle on it. I don’t know what the solution is, other than individual policing of users, which Leon pretty well does now. It’s becoming almost a full time job, I’m sure. It’s a shame there are so many bad actors out there anymore.

Leon doesn't have to go at it alone. There are members who would happily moderate the forum for him. I would have no problem myself doing it unpaid. And I'm sure others are the same. I know how he runs it, politically neutral and loose (meaning to get banned you really have to really be a jackass). He just simply has to make a few people moderators and tell them, you can only ban bots and scammers.
