Top 3 cards of Ruth, Cobb, and Shoeless Joe

What would you guys say are top 3 cards in highest demand of Ruth, Cobb, and Shoeless Joe? Besides Baltimore News and Ruth Rookies, Old Mill Joe Jax, and Cobb back red portrait, what would you guys say are the top 3 cards in highest demand of each of these players?

ruth...they're all hot...especially early caramels/exhibits/mid 20's caramels/goudeys

cobb...t206/rare postcards/CJ of course

JJ...e90-1/CJ are king

On Cobb, I agree that it is the Cracker Jacks (14,15), any of several rare postcards, and the W600. I do think that the t-227, green t206, and t-3 deserve a mention.

Ruth- his rookie, the Baltimore Sun, and the goudeys (though there are other more rare and expensive cards from his time in Boston, the goudeys have to be mentioned.) if only Cracker Jack had included him!

i don't consider the OM JJ as its out of reach of most!

And of course the M101-6 is now hot since I sold mine 2 years ago!!!!

For Ruth, it's not the most expensive but certainly is one of his most desired cards. And for Cobby, maybe a T206 RED......and for Joe J....maybe a CJ.

You could probably get a WG card of Jax that might look a little better than the W514 for a bit less money.

A Ruth card, for sheer eye appeal, the 1926 Exhibit pose is one heck of a card. Classic and just oozes vinatge. Beautiful.

D304 Cobby was the first card used for a Net54baseball T shirt...for a reason. I still think I like the T205 a bit better but I really like the D304s...

Demand is a bit determinant on price. Everyone wants a Ruth Rookie, and they aren't particularly rare, but they are in huge demand at a certain price and not as much at another. Maybe the better question is posed with price "not" determinant and price determinant? And for some eye candy the D304s I used to own, with Cobby...the bottom Rucker made it back into the current collection...

I couldn't agree more. If that card were released in a "standard size," guys would go ga-ga over it. Never mind that everyone adores the enormous T3 and the tiny t206. The 21 Exhibits and the exhibits series of champions are also amazing, and nicer than ANY standard cards released of Ruth prior to the Goudeys. Here is a side by side of a standard card and the exhibit with the same image. Bigger IS better. And since Cobb is included in this thread, I will include him too. The beauty of the image is multiplied 100x over on an exhibit or a postcard. And it's not like these "standard" cards had stat or bio-backs, so that distinction wouldn't fly either.

Your graphic comparison should be most compelling for the unconvinced, or the tunnel-visioned malcontents that insist "important cards" are only chosen from what was the standard size of that time period. I sometimes term their malady as being "standard-sized card challenged".

The same thing occurs on the post-war side, too.

On the other hand, with the prime focus recently on the Lou Gehrig Exhibit, some collectors are finally starting to think "outside the box". It's not good if we all think alike anyway; variety is the spice of life. Moreover, to the point, if you see the beauty and the refined aesthetics in some of the over-sized cards, and your rivals do not, or are blinded by their own assumptions etc, that means less competition for you in pursuing them. That point is also quite profound.

I just wish I could afford a T-3 Ty Cobb. What a masterpiece! Even if Ty was the player most often chosen by collectors back in the 1910s, and thus the most "common", think about what the ravages of time, handling, and sunlight did to almost all of them..............

My apology. Excluding the ‘14 and ‘16 Ruth rookie cards, I would say the ‘15 postcard, ‘17 CM/BS issues and the ‘21 E121 Boston Pitching Pose. I choose the 1921 E121 over the Frederick Foto because its ultra-desirable and somewhat scarce (as opposed to Ruth Goudey’s). The FF Ruth is so rare, it falls in the category of “out of sight, out of mind”. Yet, it is a great card.

So many other spectacular Ruth scarcities including his 1928/29 Star Player Candy issues; 1921 National Caramel, 1933 Uncle Jacks and his 1920 M101-6 Felix Mendelssohn Yankees issue. FYI, one of Ruth’s RAREST cards just might be his 1917-1919 M101-6 Felix Mendelssohn BOSTON version. I have seen only ONE surface in the past 10+ years, and know of only one other example.

I guess I would squeeze the 1910 Clement Brothers Ty Cobb somewhere on this list. Any issue of one of these guys with a combined pop of 5 or less definitely has more demand than supply.

Most desirable is a relative term. I think this is my 3rd (successive) one of these in my collection. When a nice one comes up the competition is always there, unfortunately. This is a 4 but my previous 2.5 above was easily as nice and a bit better centered. Glad a board member has it now.
