Do you think the hand drawn 1901 Police Gazette supplement is based on the Bain photo? I know that, among other inconsistencies, the sleeves are a different color, but it is a drawing.
I am trying to date the Mathewson photo on the right. Based on the uniform, I have it down to 1900-02, but I would love to narrow it down more. Thanks in advance for your comments. |

Not likely, most of those early images were actually traced directly from a reversed photo to make an engraving or print. I would bet there is an exact image of that somewhere that was used.

Kevin, I don't have an opinion in response to your question, and I'm not trying to hijack your thread. But, I find it very interesting to compare your 1901 Police Gazette Supp. of Matty to the one that Mile High claims is a 1901 PG Supp. of Matty in their current auction - here's the link: https://www.milehighcardco.com/LotDe...entoryid=56924 Even before I saw your example, I wondered if the one in Mile High is a legitimate PG Supp. because it lacks the narrative at the top of the piece.

Val
These came in two versions. The ones put into the magazines had "Supplement" printed at the top. At the end of the year Police Gazette sold the entire series in a book form. They were the same size and composition as the supplements, just issued differently and since they were not put into a magazine, they did not print the line of text at the top. I believe all the others in the book from that year were boxers but the Mathewson was issued in the book form. I owned one of the complete books about five years ago.

Rhys, thanks for enlightening me. Again, I am amazed by the knowledge of the Net54 board members and appreciative of the willingness of most to share it.
