You get to pick 1 card at each player position - If the position is listed on the card front - the player has to be in that position on your "team" (example - can't use 1914 Baltimore news Ruth as an "outfield" card) - Not limited to post war. Think if you could own only 9 cards in your collection - One for a player at each position, Which 9 would they be? Think about the combination of player and card significance. I'll also allow (since it's a thread I'm starting) 3 runner ups. These can be cards you own or would want to own (I do not own any of the pictured cards.....yet - I do own other copies of some of them). Here are mine:
1st base - 1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig 2nd Base - 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson 3rd base - 1968 Topps Test 3D Brooks Robinson Shortstop - T206 Wagner Pitcher - 1968 Venezuelan Nolan Ryan Catcher - 1968 Kahn's Johnny Bench Left Field - 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth Center field - 1953 Stahl Meyer Mickey Mantle Right Field - 1967 Topps Giant Stand up Clemente Runner ups: Right Field - 1958 Kahn's Weiners Clemente Center field - 1959 Bazooka Mickey Mantle box Center field - T3 Ty Cobb Last edited by hcv123; 05-17-2018 at 09:53 PM. |

I'll answer a little differently just to avoid a lot of repeats. Though I'm not really a rookie card collector, I will list my top RCs per position.
C - 1968 Topps Johnny Bench 1B - 1934 Goudey Hank Greenberg 2B - 1965 Topps Joe Morgan 3B - 1975 Topps George Brett SS - 1979 OPC Ozzie Smith OF - 1954 Topps Hank Aaron OF - 1957 Topps Frank Robinson OF - 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson P - 1972 Topps JR Richard I know my pitcher looks like he doesn't belong, but I'm a big fan of his. Plus I sold my Koufax so my only other pre-1980 pitcher RCs are Eck, Sutter, and Blyleven.

No right or wrong here. Not even anything to debate. Just another angle on sharing personal preference of card collecting - can be, but doesn't have to be cards you own. Overlap, no overlap -doesn't matter -what are/ would be your picks?

These, for me, were ones that I thought, artistically, just....wow! Not necessarily the best player or the most expensive card, just cards that have really caught my eye over the years. (I shall own that e95 Cobb someday!)
Starter: Walter Johnson t206 portrait Catcher: 1953 Bowman color Roy Campanella First Base: 1888 Goodwin Dan Brouthers Second Base: 1933 Goudey Charlie Gehringer Shortstop: t206 Wagner Third Base: 1935 Diamond Stars Stan Hack Right Field: 1972 Topps Roberto Clemente Center Field: E95 Ty Cobb Left Field: 1974 Topps Pete Rose Runner up is '34 Goudey Greenberg cards.jpg |

This is a fun idea. I'm going to go with cards that are actually in my collection. (Otherwise we're going to get a lot of 34 Gehrigs at 1B.)

Bobby Veach was in the conversation too. Toyed with putting Heilmann in RF, but I think Kaline was the better all-around player. Crawford and Heilmann probabaly both had better overall careers than Horton though, but they played right while Horty played left. And I was sticking to position, but if I just picked 3 OFs without regard, it'd be Cobb, Kaline, Heilmann.

Verlander, or Morris, over Newhouser?

Great as he was, Cochrane was only a Tiger for a couple years, so I didn't think he belongs on the all-time team. And there are about 5 or 6 pitchers who could carry the torch for the D, but I'm sticking with Newhouser.

He was phenomenal during the mid 40s but it seems he had an awful lot of mediocre or even bad years. From more of a distance than you, he would not be my first choice.

Whatever is posted is personal choice - as stated in original post - it is a combination of the quality of the player and equal or more importantly the quality/desirability of the card - It's awesome to see the variation already in the number of people who have responded - great picks by all. No need to defend your picks - they are yours! Let's see some more!

I'll offer a post war team especially as we don't have many pics here. Ted is DH.

Well OK to keep this going here is my second team post-war. Reggie at DH after Martin pulls him from the outfield.
