I apologize in advance if I’m asking in the incorrect manor, but was curious to know if there were ever any cards issued, or printed in old magazines that could be collected after being hand cut? I remember back in the 80s SI for kids had cards, and that was one of my favorite things about receiving the magazine. Now curious to know, if there were ever any special edition magazines, back in the 30s/40s/50s or whenever that may have inserted cards like this? I thought I recalled some thing posted here before. But could not locate in a search.
Wanting to know if this was in fact a “thing” or if I was mistaken. Last edited by Filthy; 02-25-2018 at 12:12 PM. |

Sports Illustraded had a set of cards in 1954. They were released over two different issues. In 1959, Oklahoma Today published a magazine with a set of cards. The only other I know of was the inclusion of Mantle and Maria cards in a 1962 issue of Life Magazine. I'm sure there were more though.

SI also had two different 1955 issues with 1955 Topps cards in them. The cards were made on glossy paper with thinner than standard borders. I am not sure if there is an actual market for them cut out but as a player collector I was pleased to pick up a mag and take a cutter to it.

I wonder if the "cards" printed in Sports Illustrated were supposed to be cut out. I suppose so, considering the backs were printed on the other side of the page.
As far as value, William Wilen's Mickey Mantle Baseball Card Collector's Guide (Summer Game Books, 2016) says the Mantle card from the fold-out, by itself, books at $225. Unfortunately, Wilen incorrectly states that the fold-out "included nine players, including Mantle, as they had appeared in their 1954 Topps card" (page 32) when the reality is that Mantle did not have a 1954 Topps card.
