Lew Lipset put out The Old Judge Newsletter from 1985 -1994 (Jan.) In it he discussed all aspects of the hobby. There were 50 issues, with a few supplements, and as far as I can tell, no number 49. They are some fun reading.

Yep, Lew pulled no punches in that newsletter, at a time when the hobby was undergoing a lot of changes. He's a member of this board and used to lurk, though I don't think he does that much any more.

Leon,
Do you have the full run of that publication?

I do, just picked it up (had a full run of copies previously.) Lew and I chatted about it very briefly this morning. He has always been a big help to me (and the hobby) in collecting endeavors.

Does that mean you have the complete run without any missing issues (1-50)? I think there's a 5A and 6A along with the regular 5 and 6.
I believe you indicated that 50 wasn't published so that would mean a run of 1-49. Do you have any dupes?

1985 such a different world. What we were thought were unacceptable conflicts of interest in those days today would be just shrugged aside.
The whole thing with SCD was because they, as a publication, tended to truly dislike the east coast and the Midwest was their strong hold. Would the show in 1986 had been better than Arlington TX. I don't think so but I don't know but in terms of the concept of the National trying the Southwest was a better idea Rich

I rteally enjoy seeing these old price lists and those look like they would be alot of fun to own. Never had the pleasure of talking to or dealing with Lew but he from what ever one says seems like a hobby legend.

Lew was a hobby giant during his time. Not only did he have encyclopedic knowledge of cards, he was a gifted writer who could present his research, and views, in an interesting way. All his content was self generated, unlike later publications which needed to rely on the kindness of others to do their research.

I wrote a few articles for TOJ. It was the best of its kind while it lasted. I also have a complete run. And Leon is correct, there was no issue #49.

I have a 5A (and 6A).
Leon, if you ever speak to Lew again in the near future, can you please ask him if he ever ran into an Anson in Uniform (N172). It's listed in the price guide (your post) at $1K. Will be willing to trade issues to make a complete run. I have the near run but I think I'm missing 2 or 3.

I e-mailed Lew and alerted him to this thread. Here is what he said, straight from the horse's mouth:
"A complete run of TOJ is 1-5, 5A, 6, 6A, 7-46, 47-8 (one issue) and 50.Thats 50 issues." He also said that he did once own an Old Judge Anson in uniform, which he may have gotten from Wharton-Tyger, but he sold it years ago. Also, he still checks in on Net54 every day, though just as a lurker. |

Not reputedly, definitely. Abner Dalrymple's uniform. You wanna know how I know? Because the Bible told me so... see page 94 of the OJ book!

Thanks Joe

I'd post something for 5A but I'd feel odd not doing without Lew's permission.
Besides, I'm horrible with adding graphics to forum. 5A content: COVER "The Restoration of Cards", "Opening Comments" and "National Registration News" pages 2 and 3 are 20th Cent. Tobacco Price Guide content. BACK Continuation of "The Restoration of Cards" from the cover page. One thing that really tripped me out was that 5A is on the back, Julie Vognar wrote a paragraph about her thoughts on altering cards. Holy crud , I haven't seen or heard of Julie in ages. Total trip.

I wish you'd reprint page 2 so we can see the conclusion of the conflict of interest article. It would help to explain the different world of 1985-86 versus today Rich
