Diagnosis is the key to effective therapy.
As a collector you have OCD, whether you know it or not. If you don't know what OCD is, look it up. Collectors as a whole are a fickle "group" of OCDers (and yes some are OBCers ![]() Individual collectors, however, may be extremely consistent and not fickle in and of themselves. Others may be extremely fickle in and of themselves shifting the focus of their collection on a whim. But as a part of the larger collective or group of collectors, being fickle to other members of the group can make you fit in. For example, if your collection is defined by a "Howe-McCormick" stamp on the back of your cards, your collection is quite unique and you are one of a kind. But you are also admired and lauded by the vast majority of the larger group of collectors. The stamp is Ed's fickleness. Hi Ed. Our collections are defined by our fickleness, if you will. There are numerous broad and specific criteria by which our collections are defined. What other people think of our collections generally matters little, particularly if they disagree with our "fickleness". So what is your fickleness? Are you obsessed with the condition or grade of the card? Must your cards be perfectly centered? Are you allergic to plastic (TPG) and crack cards routinely out of their slab? Are you primarily concerned with rarity and put your faith in POP reports? Is something that was once considered trash from the printer, the focus of your "scrap" collection? Are you making a living, or trying to, flipping cards for profit? Or does the focus of your collection trump any concern about the "bottom line" of your hobby pursuits? Are you a type collector or a set collector? Are you a hunter, who sells a set when it is completed, or a hoarder, who never sells and has a seemingly endless supply of closets? Do you fraternize with other collectors, even though they may bidding against you or are you a "lurking hermit"? Fess up. You need not answer all the questions which merely serve as examples. There is something about your collecting habits that many others would consider "fickle".

So what is your fickleness?
Don't care what the back looks like as long as the front looks EX or better. And then I see there is another world outside T206s. So now I moved on to E-cards. Are you obsessed with the condition or grade of the card? Grade is just a number. I prefer eye-appeal over grade - with affordability considerations. Must your cards be perfectly centered? No, but close enough is good. Are you allergic to plastic (TPG) and crack cards routinely out of their slab? No. Are you primarily concerned with rarity and put your faith in POP reports? No. But if an affordable rarity pops up, I'll take my shot. Is something that was once considered trash from the printer, the focus of your "scrap" collection? What??? Are you making a living, or trying to, flipping cards for profit? Profit is the last thing on my mind. Or does the focus of your collection trump any concern about the "bottom line" of your hobby pursuits? No. There will always be something outside my focus that I might find interesting. Are you a type collector or a set collector? Type. Are you a hunter, who sells a set when it is completed, or a hoarder, who never sells and has a seemingly endless supply of closets? Hoarder. Do you fraternize with other collectors, even though they may bidding against you or are you a "lurking hermit"? I don't know that many for me to fraternize. So I guess that make me a lurking perv-... errrr, hermit! Fess up. There is something about your collecting habits that many others would consider "fickle". I don't know. I will let you decide. Let me know if you see a pattern. ![]()

So what is your fickleness?
I know what I like and those tastes haven’t changed in quite a while. I don’t foresee my going in any new directions with my collection, though I reserve the right to change my mind at any time. Are you obsessed with the condition or grade of the card? That is dependent upon the issue. For T cards, VG is fine with me. For the 50’s, I like Ex-ExMt. 70’s or later as close to MT as possible...otherwise not interested. Must your cards be perfectly centered? This has become a major requirement for me... Are you allergic to plastic (TPG) and crack cards routinely out of their slab? Nope. Are you primarily concerned with rarity and put your faith in POP reports? Nope. Is something that was once considered trash from the printer, the focus of your "scrap" collection? Would love to have a Hal Chase scrap...otherwise, not too interested. Are you making a living, or trying to, flipping cards for profit? Nope. Or does the focus of your collection trump any concern about the "bottom line" of your hobby pursuits? Anyone who has a Josh Phelps collection is more interested in something other than making a buck... Are you a type collector or a set collector? I guess a set collector since I have a few in progress (T205, Diamond Stars, ‘51 Bowman, ‘54 Topps, 56 Topps & ‘73 Topps). Also collect Hal Chase and Lefty O’Doul and Don Mattingly... Are you a hunter, who sells a set when it is completed, or a hoarder, who never sells and has a seemingly endless supply of closets? A hoarder unfortunately. Do you fraternize with other collectors, even though they may bidding against you or are you a "lurking hermit"? Wish I knew more folks to fraternize with. None of my friends are collectors. ![]() Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

"Are you a type collector or a set collector?"
Frank, is there a reason you didn't offer "specific-player(s) collector" as a choice?

So what is your fickleness?
After selling the first collection my collecting is kind of scattered. Are you obsessed with the condition or grade of the card? Grade is just a number. I prefer eye-appeal over grade - with affordability considerations. Must your cards be perfectly centered? Unfortunately at least almost perfect centering has become the norm. Are you allergic to plastic (TPG) and crack cards routinely out of their slab? raw of slabbed is ok Are you primarily concerned with rarity and put your faith in POP reports? Yes I like rarity and the pop reports are stupid. Is something that was once considered trash from the printer, the focus of your "scrap" collection? No but I do like miscuts and errors. Are you making a living, or trying to, flipping cards for profit? No, on a living from selling cards, although I am a collector and a flipper. Or does the focus of your collection trump any concern about the "bottom line" of your hobby pursuits? I am always interested in the value of my collection and how much I am paying for something. That said I will pay a crazy, way too high price, for something I want or need. Are you a type collector or a set collector? Type, but have dabbled with a few sets. Are you a hunter, who sells a set when it is completed, or a hoarder, who never sells and has a seemingly endless supply of closets? The hunt is most of the fun for me so I will sell. Do you fraternize with other collectors, even though they may bidding against you or are you a "lurking hermit"? Since I am almost always on the forum I guess I fraternise. Fess up. There is something about your collecting habits that many others would consider "fickle". Dunno... .
