George Wright’s personal copy of Out Door Sports for Boys (and Girls), edited by Lynds E Jones, Routledge, 1890, 143 pages.
Book originates from his personal library as explained in Jim Stinson’s letter, with a very strong pencil autograph on the front free endpaper. Very nice chromolithograph cover with Baseball, Football etc, while the contents include Baseball, Football, cricket, golf, tennis etc. with nice illustrations.
An interesting 19th century book, but especially important due to Wright’s autograph.
Given Wright’s involvement with the Wright and Ditson sporting goods firm, this book is even more interesting as it probably served as a reference for Wright.
It is an early book for some of these sports other than baseball, such as football, golf and tennis. Wright has been described as the father of golf in New England, and was one of the early proponents in America. In tennis his sons were world class players and he played tennis and cricket at the Longwood Cricket Club most of his life, not to mention the family cricket background.
A very nice early Wright autograph in an historic book related to his business.
Importantly, there is a letter of authenticity from Jim Stinson, from whom I purchased this book in 2013.
