What is happening with prices? Is this just a bidding war between a few collectors or are prices like this here to stay?

I think that vintage on-card autographs have always been an under-appreciated facet of the hobby. It doesn't take too many bidders to cause a run-up on prices for signed vintage cards, especially when it is a popular issue that has several collectors.
While a thin market (the inventory in some cases is scarcer than hen's teeth), it is a market that has some very dedicated collectors and some very deep pockets. I am rarely surprised by realized prices on some of the prewar material and I don't expect the escalation to stop. I am a bit surprised, however, by the recent surge in value of signed rookies that are still alive and signing.

I've noticed rise in the prices of signed prewar cards, but I haven't yet seen that spread to postwar cards across the board. Last Sunday, over 200 signed 1953 Topps auctions ended, most of them far below what I expected. The only exceptions seemed to be Yankees, Dodgers, and a handful of high numbers and rookies.

As the cosigner of 3/4 of these, all I can say is Amen.

I think the Marquard surprised me most since there are alot out there and last year we were astounded when they hit $1500. If 10 more hit the market I would think prices would plummet. Kind of want to kick myself for trading signed T206 to Paul of Clarke and Young
