Need a little help/class on detecting fake cards. Any info on E94 cards and Yuenglings Ice Cream cards will be of great help? As of now, I own a E94 Ty Cobb (Olive Drab Background) and a Yuenglings Ice Cream (Ty Cobb). Before I begin to expand on these sets I need to know what to look for as far authenticity.
Again thanks alot for any help. |

I'm not an expert on either of those sets, but the fact that you have two legitimate examples is a huge plus. You can compare those to any potential purchases with the naked eye, under magnification to compare printing dot patterns (or lack thereof), as well as comparing them under black light. Of course this only helps if you are looking at the cards in person, but I'm sure you'll get more insight from other board members

Examine the cards you have under different magnification levels. Look at the edges and dot patterns. Buy a cheap black light and put them under it. I am not sure there are many tricks to spotting bad cards from these series anymore than by handling them and getting to know them.

Post scans on here and you will know in short order if they are good or not. The better the front and back scan the easier to let you know. Both issues have lots of experts on this board who will know, most will also point out if they are fake, why.

The evenly rounded corners is an instant tip-off. I'd be wary that these were fakes.

I'd like to see some higher quality scans but they do look worrisome. Where did you get them?

My concerns on the E94 are that the Blome's Chocolate overprint is way too perfect. It doesn't look period to me at all. It looks like it was printed on the card recently. Also, the front appears to have normal borders while the back has virtually no border around the type. It looks odd to me.
Best regards, AndyH

Hi-
I believe I saw that card in the same holder at the Brimfield antique fair a couple of years ago. I believe the dealer was from PA. The dealer who had it said he did not know if it was real. I did not think it was, but I asked a friend with more knowledge and he concurred with my assessment. The dealer also had some of the Yuenglings. There were some real ones that my friend purchased (low grade commons and one minor HOFer), but the Cobb was there too and he also said it was fake. He told the dealer about them, but unfortunately, the dealer obviously sold them. I hope you are not out too much money on these. Alan Elefson |

I think they are both fakes also. In addition to the corner rounding already mentioned other things to look for when detecting fakes are that the picture on front just does not seem as "crisp," the colors don't seem right (may seem washed out), the borders look too "white" given the wear on the rest of the card, and the card doesn't show the level of detail and shading that the genuine card shows. In addition, the back may seem "off." One good way to learn about this is to compare the card in question with one that you know is real (such as one encapsulated by PSA or SGC).
Here are scans of a genuine card E94 Cobb (not mine). As you can see, the back of your card seems "cramped" even though it doesn't seem trimmed where a genuine card has much better spacing on the back. Last edited by glchen; 09-04-2014 at 09:24 AM. |

in most cases...one just needs their eyes to know if a card is real or fake. examine a known real one next to the card in question under magnification and look at the fine details...it's not rocket science.

I think I need help understanding how he was told this (obvious fakes) 3 yrs ago in this thread and is trying to sell them in the 2 threads I posted, which were in the last week or so? And I was completely scolded by the OP in a PM last night for questioning the current sales on the BST?

The apparent buyer, Ted watches the board and is experienced. I will PM him too.
I guess it should be pointed out that this thread was ONLY bumped after I sent the link to it to the OP in a PM asking him to explain himself, within the last day. I guess bumping the thread makes it better somehow? .

He probably just saw the too-good-to-be-true price and bought it without even seeing a scan. Kind of shady to be told cards are fake and then sell them later without a scan. If there's a chance they are fakes, you should definitely post a scan (and probably not try to sell them). Kind of ironic that a guy who is trying to sell a $10 t206 beater for $600 on the BST bought a $1 fake e94 for $650 on the BST. Hope he gets his money back of course.

If you were given confirmation of their authenticity, why aren't the cards graded? That would be confirmation.

The reaction to this has been less than what I would have thought. I can't imagine having this type of behaviour on a board I am responsible for and doing nothing about it. The OP is out of here......If he wants to come back and apologize for this idiocy, then we'll see. Until then I don't think we need this on our board.
Add that to the fact of a board registration I received yesterday which was sort of ironic. It was for a John Rodriquez. What do you know, a coincidence of this OPs last name? Since the OP has repeatedly asked me when he would get banned I thought something might be up. So I pick up the phone and call John. A guy answers., I ask for Anthony (the OPs name). The guy hesitates a bit and says he isn't there. I ask for John *(whose registration this is). The guy hesitates again and tells me he isn't there either, LMAO. He told me his name was Manuel. I said, ugh.....and hung up. What are the chances of that not being connected? .

I think there aren't as many eyes on this because of the innocuous thread title. If people realized what was actually going on they'd all be out with their popcorn.

I could tell the OP was a scammer just by the cards he posted in the post-war B/S/T. Here's a Maris with a corner crease and other wear he calls near mint/mint:

I don't think he is an out and out scammer, he always struck me as someone who didn't really know much about cards and wasn't willing to learn. I believe that he wanted so badly to fit into the clique of the pre-war crowd, but didn't realize that he would never have the resources to fit in there. I was looking at some of his items for sale and noticed that he wanted $17 for a 1979 Topps Reggie Jackson described as very good-excellent with no scan. The only way that card could be worth any where near that is if it is in a PSA 9 or 10 slab. I am guessing that he got taken in by a scammer on those two Ty Cobb cards, and rather than eat the two bogus cards and chalk it up to experience after being told by several people here that they were fake, he stubbornly ignored them and believed what he wanted to anyway despite the contrary evidence.

I would argue your Reggie story proves he is a scammer. Along with the "NM/MT" '63 Maris in the other thread linked above which MIGHT have been EX.
