Here are some of the cards that I generally regard as part of my "permanent" collection. I'm happy to have them there, but I was recently asked about one of them and quoted someone a price. Which inspired this post. The point of which is just to see if any of these cards would be worth even more to someone else than it is to me, in which case I would be happy (enough) to sell.
Collins (SGC 10) -- only graded copy of Eddie Collins's rookie card -- $2000 Garvin (VG-Ex) -- first MLB card of a player born in the state of Texas -- $2500 Glazner (SGC 40) -- nicest of the 3 known Cafe du Monde cards -- $3000 Prices are firm. Cards are offered only through July 4th. Last edited by darwinbulldog; 07-05-2017 at 07:43 AM. |

Glenn-I believe Frank "The Texas Wonder" Hoffman, who is in the Old Judge set, was the first Texas born(Houston) major league player with a card.

Indeed, but not a major league card.

I found similar issues in several states when I started putting together a collection of the 50 states' "rookie cards." In Mississippi, for example, there is a card of Doug Crothers in the minors from 1886 but not a major league card of anyone until Sport McAllister. South Dakota has a couple of guys with Zeenuts but no one shown in the majors until 1958 Topps. Utah and Washington also have some Zeenuts guys years before any major league cards. Anyway, I've got extensive notes on all of the states, states who had guys born before statehood, states who have guys who debuted before another player born earlier in the same state, etc.

I'm with you Glenn. So Hoffman is the first Texas born major leaguer with a card, just not a major league card. If an 1888 KC card of Hoffman turns up that would check all the boxes. It is possible, but has not turned up yet.

Exactly. And that would be quite a find.
