1907 Ty Cobb Rookie Postcard Run Complete

Last night I was fortunate enough to buy the final card I needed to complete the 1907 Cobb Rookie Postcard run. This was a challenging undertaking since four of the seven cards have a known population of 11 or less. When I first bought the Dietsche batting (the first one I bought), I got buyer's remorse before the card even arrived in the mail. "I don't collect postcards! What the heck am I doing?" Well, that changed very quickly. As I fell in love with the big bold images, I learned more about these rare and beautiful Cobbs. I realized that they were no different than baseball cards, just bigger, and often nicer pictures. Heck, most prewar cards don't even have stat backs or bios anyway (the Dietsche actually do). So I searched high and low, and with the help of some great members on n54, was able to complete this run. I own other Cobb postcards that I love as well, but here is the 1907 Run: Dietsche Batting and Fielding, Wolverine News Batting and Pose, Novelty Cutlery, HM Taylor, and the newest one, the Detroit Seemless Steel Tubes. The Steel Tubes has some bad toning, but is actually the highest graded of the four known specimens. The only way I can post on this site is in collage format, so I did the best I could.

Congrats Orlando. Well done and in a short time frame. I would put those beauties in the bank box or safe as I couldn't relax having people in the house with them on display. What's your favorite one 1907 Cobb postcard? The Novelty is mine.

Thanks Guys. I am partial to the Wolverine Pose. Kevin, I will defer to your expertise on the Novelty. It is labeled 1907, though I have heard rumblings that it could be a bit later. As for team cards, they just don't do it for me. Maybe one day.

Chris, what card is that??? Looks like an 1980's tribute cards that Dean's would sell for $2,459.00.
EDIT: wow, it is actually a 1910 card. I had never seen that one before.

Mike, the WAS YOU! I had to check the psa registry since I knew you only through EBay, and I only remembered that the seller had the #1 Dietsche set registry. Had no clue you were on this board. Yes, you started the addiction. You also included that wonderful article from Old Cardboard about Dietsche as the Gateway to prewar postcard collecting. Thank you for that. I will continue to go after other Cobb postcards, but the ones left on my list are extremely rare. Looking for an American Pub, Detroit Free Press, and the Hubel. There are one graded of each and 3 (one of each) that are raw that I know of. So those will be tough. Would also love a Cobb/Wagner PC. In the meantime I will seek out other nice early "standard" Cobb's. So great to know you are on here, and thank you again for introducing me to these amazing treasures!

I wondered if you got the Seamless, Orlando--terrific pick-up and card (might well have been mine had it come up two months from now!)--1925 Gehrig rookie, watch out, and may the Dietsche Fielding pose (meaning, "mine") and the Wolverine News Portrait (again meaning "mine") follow suit in value!!!

While I have heard the controversy re the date of issueance of the Novelty Cutlery's, I was not aware of any consensus having been reached. Is either PSA or SGC labeling them a 1910 vs 1907 issue?

Kevin Struss has proven without a doubt that it cannot be 1907, a search of n54 and you'll find the thread. I can't speak for the grading companies.

Orlando, you have put together an absolutely fantastic collection is a relatively short periord of time. Congratulations.

I do not mean to hijack your thread, but since there seems to be some confusion regarding the PC805 Novelty Cutlery set, I thought that I would make a quick post.

There is quite a bit of evidence that the set was not produced until very late 1909, or probably 1910. There are a number of players pictured in uniforms that can be precisely dated to 1909. Also, the earliest postmark that I have ever seen for either a PC796 Sepia postcard or a PC805 Novelty Cutlery is 1910.

Lastly, the image of Cobb and Wagner is a very famous one from the 1909 World Series.

Please Kevin, no worries. I love becoming educated about these things, and I think it's great that others do too. Extremely compelling arguments. Looks like it isn't a 1907. That's cool though. Can't say it affects my affinity for it, or its value for that matter. It's a bad ass card. Maybe you can espouse your argument as to why the Brush is a 1908 and not a 1910 as it is labeled.

Bill Couglin left the Tigers after the 1908 season and went on to be a player/manger for the Williamsport team of the Tri-State League in 1909.

Ira Thomas only played one year with the Tigers. He was purchased by them on December 12, 1907 and subsequently sold to the Athletics on December 8, 1908.

Correct. All of the players who are in the set played for the Tigers in 1908.
