So I wanted to give a public shout out to two of our board members.
Mac Wubben took two cards out of his own personal collection and traded them to Ken McMillan, so that Ken would send me one of my final 8 1923 W572s. For those that don't know, I'm pretty sure no one has ever completed the set (unless it was done by somebody when the set was issued in the 1920s and knowledge of this has been lost to history). I believe I currently have the most cards anyone has ever assembled in that set (114 out of the 121 - and 2 of the missing ones have never been graded or photographed (Barbare and Rapp) and 2 other missing ones have never been photographed (Duncan and Wambsganns) but have been graded - and hopefully these really are W572s and not a misidentification) with Ken having the second most complete set I know of. So really outstanding kindness by our two board members to dig into their own collections and help me out. I'm humbled and thankful, Patrick Last edited by SMPEP; 02-16-2017 at 11:23 AM. |

Knew the W572 collection was huge for you. I like my T205 Cubs/ reverses so this has taken a priority over W572 cards. With Mac's help, this is a win win for both of us and i am greatful to him. Have not completely gotten out of W572 cards but given the opportunity to trade for more of my T205 Cubs/ reverses or T207 Cubs/ reverses, I would do it again. Now have to get the cards slabbed to fit the rest of the collection. Collection is now 134/152 possible cards. Love it.

Congrats Patrick on being the King of the W572 hill. W572's definitely fly under most collector's radar, but are still a neat set that for the most part share the same images also seen in the E120 American Caramel and V61 Neilson's sets.
I have been of the opinion for many years that there are about 10 really tough cards to obtain, which in my mind makes it seem like there was a short print of one of the ten card strips. By the way, here is an image of a SGC graded W572 Wambsganss. Brian Last edited by brianp-beme; 02-16-2017 at 05:26 PM. Reason: Spelling on silly Bill's last name |

Awesome! Thanks for posting that Brian!
121 always seemed an odd number for cards sold in strips of 10, so if one is not a W572 in reality, you've now narrowed it down to Duncan, Barbare (which was the last addition to the list) and Rapp. Cheers, patrick |

Brian Pat and Ken: I apologize for my ignorance regarding this set, but I have a question: Why does Wambsganss appear left-handed on that card. Bill Wambsganss was right-handed.

No idea but interesting question. Mirror image in printing process?

Not a reversed image, as you can still see the words from Cleveland on his chest and the "C" on his hat is right (same image is in the M101-4/5 and E121 set). The player appears is lefty Frederick "Fritz" Coumbe (not Wambsganss)

Attention seems to be focused elsewhere on the board, but I just wanted to stop by and mention that I've worked with both Mac and Ken in the past as well. They're good people.

I am always sympathetic to the crazy collector's quests. Lucky enough to help both Patrick and Ken with one small deal. Love seeing the progress you both are making with your collections.
