May not be the most expensive addition, but rather your favorite.
I retooled my entire collection from about this time last year to present. Added and subtracted hundreds of cards along the way .... still a work in progress, which is the fun part. Here is my favorite addition for 2016: 1954RHMantle.jpg This card that presents so much higher than the actual grade, and it is one of the most attractive Mantle cards ever created. Just my opinion. Looking forward to seeing a lot of cards!

It's missing the coupon at the bottom, but as soon as I saw the hot dog stains, I realized this bargain-priced "Frank Robinson photo" was actually his real rookie card.

Easy choice for me. While the card itself isn't a 2016 pickup, the sig is brand spankin' new. Took one of my top 5 favorite cards and made it THE favorite. Note: I also have an unsigned PSA 5 that's a nicer card, but this copy I got signed will always have sentimental value, as it was a Christmas gift from my sons.

Was a tough decision for my top pickup this year as I added some really nice Billy Williams cards to my collection, but to have had the opportunity to buy this 1964 Venezuelan Topps in such good condition (and acting on it) ranks it right towards the top of my list! Thanks again Josh!

Wow that's an amazing card! I'm slowly chipping away at the 64 Venz set, but none of my HOFers are graded higher than a 2. Congrats on owning a beauty!

Ben-- I have always favored that Exhibit of Ted Williams. It is just so serene and flat out attractive. It may be plentiful, and not very expensive, but so what? Beauty, perfect simple design, and a full-length shot of Ted at bat. I felt it was a genuine bargain when I got mine in about 1973. You felt the same in 2016.

This is tough!
I just joined the site back in January and hadn't collected cards in years and years, or for 35+ or more. I had my 52 Topps collection that my Father gave me so I started collecting those plus a bunch of others (in my link below) but switched back/dedicated my collecting focus to mainly 52's. I am glad I was able to add a Clemente, an Aaron or two, and a host of other HOF cards, but I will say, (because I am only allowed to pick one), that my 52 Topps Ashburn has to be it. I am glad to add a Spahn, Feller and Irvin, but knowing my Uncle owned an Ashburn, but sold it, and a bunch of other 52 Topps cards, it is a card I have wanted for a long time.

Very seldom these years do I pick up a post-War card. This rather scarce 1948-50 Safe-T-Card (a DC-area issue) is for my collection of cards of all the players on the 1924 Washington Senators championship team, of which Bucky "The Boy Wonder" Harris was the manager and 2nd baseman.

Lots of Micks here in this thread, but everything shown has been simply stunning! I also love that crease-free 1956 Frank Robinson (w/out coupon) - great find!!
I think my favorite post-war pick-up in 2016 was this 1975 Montreal Expos Team Issue PC of Gary Carter. ![]()

Big Red Machine--
Thanks for sharing your exotic pick up of 2016. That is one huge beautiful significant Big Red Machine card, bro. I do not know if PSA has a holder that can encapsulate that baby WITHOUT BENDING AN END. Certainly, it's a most worthy submission. Dazzling, simply dazzling. What is the year on that Bench, 1968 or 1969? Whatever, it's making me hungry for hot dogs! You ought to buy my book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, as it goes right along with your gem, covering as it does the period I refer to as THE GOLDEN QUARTER CENTURY 1947 - 1971. Anyway, take good care of it! ![]() |

Thanks Brian,
About a year ago I purchased a complete 1968 Kahn's full strip set (with all variations) for $5,000 which was by far my biggest card purchase ever. I kept all of the Cincinnati Reds which was the bulk of the set and sold the rest for about $4,500. It ended up being a very nice deal. I checked with PSA and they don't have a holder big enough for these. SGC doesn't have one large enough either. Take care, Phil ![]() Thanks for sharing your exotic pick up of 2016. I know it's not baseball, but this post-war card pick-up from this year is the favorite card I own. Here is a "Lorenzen with car" card of Fred Lorenzen from the landmark 1972 STP racing set. Lorenzen with car is a legendary rarity in the 11-card set, and racing cards in general.
If this card is not the holy grail of racing cards, it is in the top three or top five. Racing collector Jon Hardgrove over on the non-sport side of Network54 wrote several years ago that he had only previously seen one "Lorenzen with car" card prior to picking up his example a couple years ago. A lady in Connecticut who I bought some other STP cards from previously told me it took her 20 years of searching before she finally found a "Lorenzen with car" card -- and that one had a thumbtack hole in it. ![]() Last edited by Bored5000; 12-28-2016 at 04:15 AM. |

This is the year I went headlong into pre-war with only a few notable pickups in post war (including these couple of Topps Transcendents I won in a break that I intended to flip immediately but now have a fascination with and may keep), but this is the highlight of 2016 from a card perspective...the birth of my baby daughter was the true highlight of 2016!
