Can anyone tell me anything about the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Charlie's Bar & Grill cards? I have an opportunity to buy both for $100 total.
Also, does Gehrig have any other affordable cards? ![]() This is the card I have an opportunity to buy. Let me know your educated thoughts, please and thank you!

Pretty sure those are fantasy cards. Just look at it this way, any real Ruth card would not sell for $50 unless it was half there and the half that was there was beat beyond recognition.

This is why y'all rock! Very knowledgeable. Thank you very much!
Does Lou Gehrig have any affordable cards?

I also originally had a more distanced photo sent to me. When I got the closer up shot, I could see the lines through the card.

Affordable is a relative term. Yes he has some and finding them is the fun.

Don't tell me . . . some guy bought a bunch in an estate sale, right? Knows nothing about them.
If anyone offers you a Ruth or Gehrig anything for $29.00 its fake. |

Actually he was very honest about them. Said he doesn't know much about them, but believes they are fantasy cards. I think he's selling them at the price he is because of what's sold on eBay.

These were discussed at least once before on here. If they're the same ones, there are many things wrong with them such as the typeface used on the back which wasn't created until the 1950's-60's and also the fact that they were originally billed as 1920's, which of course was during Prohibition, so a "grill" may be appropriate but "bar", no.
Plus they just looked fake... |

They are fantasy cards and have been around for years. They are a novelty item.
As I said, inexpensive is a relative term. What is inexpensive to me might not be to you and vice versa. A decent looking Goudey Gehrig, with some minor problem that doesn't look too bad, can probably be had for around $600. There are strip cards of him like this one below (W565, not mine anymore) where the whole sheet can probably be found for a few hundred dollars and Lou himself, as a single card, for a hundred or less if patient. I am sure there are some I am not thinking of... ![]()

Kyle,
If you are looking for a Gehrig card during the era he played (1923-1939), there's nothing that strikes me as particularly cheap. His cards are in great demand and always have been. If you are looking for a decent vintage card say under $100, look at the two Swell cards on eBay from 1948. Maybe a low grade one can be had for around that price. There are some cool cards from the 60s (well after his death), like the early 60s Fleer cards. The Golden Press card from '61 is pretty cool. Occasionally you can find a Wheaties cut out from the late 30s for under $200, and they are pretty nice but condition can be a little spotty. A great thread about them exists on this board. Check out Ebay and you'll get a feel. Last edited by Snapolit1; 12-21-2016 at 08:06 PM. |

Excellent input from y'all! I really appreciate the advice.
I think I'll just be patient and look for his strip card. My HoF collection consists of playing days cards, so that would be the most economic option that y'all have provided. Again, thank you for the input!
