I have been trying to figure out how to tell the difference between the white and colored. Nearest I can figure out is that if it doesn't have brand name on the front it is a white. Is that a correct presumption?

Yes but you also have to be careful that the mfg isn't frayed off of a color one. But generally speaking, that is it. Mfgs and tobacco info is on the front of the color ones. And of course if the silk still has the cardboard back then it is the white variety.
