Wrote a letter to him in 1973 and got a really nice letter back. Move forward almost 35 years, wrote another letter and got another beautiful letter back from the gentleman. He was always my mom's favorite player and she passed that on to me, even though he had retired before my birth.
RIP Joe.

Joe was a true "every man" much like his buddy, Yogi. He was fun to watch and hear. Met him only once, but he was very approachable and you got the sense he was actually glad you had asked him to talk and shake your hand.
You have to miss an honest gentleman like that! ![]() RIP. |

According to Joe, Yogi once said about his (Joe's) golf game, you play better when you don't play.

Met him at my very first red sox game at Fenway on September 1st, 1976 when I was seven. Was with my parents and my dad spotted him in the stands when we were walking to our $7 (yes, $7) box seats prior to the game; my dad said "Hey Joe, how's Barbara Walters?!?!" He replied "She's a six million dollar woman!" (I believe she had just signed a big contract with nbc although I doubt it was that much--the six million dollar man was a popular show back then so he was just being funny). My dad and I still talk about this meeting even to this day and we both remember his line verbatim; he also signed my program for me on the cover which has a great shot of a 37 year old yaz. What's ironic is Joe was only 50 that day, just three years older than I am now. How time #%÷& flies!!!
Edited to add: For those who bothered to read what I wrote, I was wrong--found the program and ticket from the game and the ticket price was $5, not $7 so even better--not bad for a box seat to a day game that only 19,130 people attended! Last edited by bostonmarathonman; 03-24-2016 at 11:42 AM. |

I have always been a big fan of Joe Garagiola. Not only did I enjoy his work as a broadcaster, but I also had great respect for his work for the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.)

One thing I want to do with my collection is have all the major sets represented by at least one card that I really really like. This was my first 1952 Bowman:
"Extends the courtesy of all its grounds" ... I like that. Last edited by ajquigs; 03-25-2016 at 05:29 AM. |
