It's a tad out of my price range but I would love to know the history on it.

These generic ad notes were printed for several different teams in the era.

They were sold to local advertisers who could have their message overprinted on front and back.

I did a series on them for Bank Note Reporter and Sports Collectors Digest circa 2005.

There are dozens of advertisers known from many states. Most in typical circulated condition are worth $200-400, those some high-grade specimens and rare locations can bring closer to four figures.

Bob is right on.

If you are looking for Detroit Currency in particular, there are two versions, 1887 and 1888 (only the date changes, the player portraits remain the same). The 1887 are about 2-3 times more common than 1888 and collectors seem to have taken notice as they typically go for a little more than the 1887 versions. The ad can sometimes add value if it is of particular interest. Best of luck in your pursuit.

Great article Bob did in the SCD and Jerry did the same for Old Cardboard. I have followed these for a long time and the prices need to be bumped up IMO. Condition and rarity have a lot to do with it, along with the advertiser and the location of where they were distributed. Always looking to buy these baseball currency as it's still very affordable for them being from the 19th century and they have many HOFers.
