There have been a number of threads over the years on "which Southern Leaguer is toughest" etc. but I wonder if there is a definitive recent post or link on what exactly the pop reports, or other measures, show to be the approximate order of scarcity for these cards, broken down into Old Mill and any other backs....

Nothing better to do, so I just did a PSA population count.
Before doing so, my only theory with SL difficulty was the Texas Lg. is the easiest. The numbers support that. Although some variation, others are relatively equal. Stark, Dolly – San Antonio – Texas – 267 Westlake, James – Danville – Va. Lg. – 267 White, Foley – Houston – Texas – 258 Miller, Molly – Dallas – Texas – 252 Bastian, Jack – San Antonio – Texas – 249 Thebo, Tony – Waco – Texas – 247 Seitz, Charles – Norfolk – Va. Lg. – 246 Orth, Al – Lynchburg – Va. Lg. – 244 Hart, Jimmy – Montgomery – So. Assoc. – 241 King, Frank – Danville – Va. Lg. – 239 Rockenfeld, Ike – Montgomery – So. Assoc. – 233 Fritz, Charlie – New Orleans – So. Assoc. – 231 Lentz, Harry – Little Rock – So. Assoc. – 226 Smith, Carlos – Shreveport – Texas – 225 Revelle, Dutch – Richmond – Va. Lg. – 222 Bernhard, Bill – Nashville – So. Assoc. – 221 Carey, Scoops – Memphis – So. Assoc. – 217 McCauley, Pat – Portsmouth – Va. Lg. – 216 Breitenstein, Ted – New Orleans – So. Assoc. – 215 Shaughnessy, Shag – Roanoke – Va. Lg. – 215 Howard, Ernie – Savannah – SAL – 214 Paige, George – Charleston – SAL – 212 Reagan, Ed – New Orleans – So. Assoc. – 211 Lafitte, James – Macon – SAL – 210 Hart, Bill – Little Rock – So. Assoc. – 209 Guiheen, Tom – Portsmouth – Va. Lg. – 208 Molesworth, Carlton – Birmingham – So. Assoc. – 207 Bay, Harry – Nashville – So. Assoc. – 206 Manion, George – Columbia – SAL – 205 Greminger, Ed – Montgomery – So. That's great. Now you just need to do the Old Mill breakdown!
Then add the SGC numbers! |

HAHA, Not that bored to do SGC !!!!!!!!!!!
My guess on back break down is: 60 Piedmont : 40 OMSL If you just look at above vs. below average, you would get this break down in League difficulty: Easiest to toughest: Texas Lg. -- 0 of 6 below average (0.00 %) Virginia Lg. -- 6 of 12 below average (50 %) Southern Assoc. -- 14 of 20 below average (70 %) So. Atlantic Lg. -- 10 of 10 below average (100 %) Virginia Lg. has the most deviation. There are some Va. Lgers that are tough (Ryan, Hooker, Otey). The SAL is not as tough as the numbers indicate, imo ![]() |

Yes, the somewhat lower numbers for OMs reflected in somewhat higher prices. Right now on average an OM PSA 5 is getting about 400 (or more) while the same Piedmont might get 320...which seems fair.... The high-grade pop reports don't necessarily reflect the overall numbers. For one example, see Westlake....
