I currently have no white whale. It was the last t216 dots miller i needed for my run. I thought it could take a lifetime to find.
One day commercial fisherman mac wubben emailed me with my whale. Of course I had to reimburse him for operating costs!!!! I'd surmise your whale is also other's whale!!!! Any excuse to show dots!!!! |

If we're talking collecting in general, I don't believe I have one. The cards that I really want in my collection are ones all readily available if you have the financial means to acquire them, which I don't.
I suppose if I were really to choose something, a true white whale if you will it would be the Harrsion Studios Postcard of Josh Gibson. I doubt there even is another copy of this card in existence, and I'm pretty sure the only way I would ever own it would be if I suddenly inherited millions of dollars.

My white whale is the 1887 Kalamazoo Pittsburgh team card, and I won't be getting it unless I decide to sell other cards to buy it. I have other cards on my wantlist that are actually in my price range, which I would get before the Kalamazoo card.

I like how you referred to it as “white whale” and not a grail.
I think many of us have white whales until they are “captured”. Then another one emerges. At least this has been the case w/ me & hobby friends. Strange though as with other hobbies, I obtained a “white whale” in each & was perfectly content every single time . Cards on the other hand… For me , it’s the t206 Wagner. Zero chance of ever owning one. Last edited by tjisonline; 05-26-2024 at 10:58 AM. |

I have two main focuses. My WaJo back run and Pop Lloyd.
For WaJo it would be the T215 Pirate WaJo. My Lloyd would be the 1910 Punch. The odds of ever owning either are next to zero. Thanks Chad

I hope all your white whales come true
I have had a white whale for the last 10 years or so And may actually have a chance to get it (my luck having to sell some of my prized cards but it would be worth it) And those who think they know me it is not the Felix Mendelssohn Joe Jackson on Goldin(although if I had the resources I would make a run for it) My whale has to currently stay anonymous as I do not want anything or anyone to get in the way. Hopefully by the September New Picks or October I will be able to share it Stay tuned Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel

My White Whale is out there...
There are probably a few of them, and I know one did not sell when offered as Heritage lot #81887 in their May 21, 2021 auction. Maybe the consignor is reading this thread... It's the 1915 Cardinals Team m113. My smaller "off-white" whale would be the Virgil Trucks m114 with the NL Photo caption similar to the one below. I collect Jersey City Skeeters cards. This is one of my White Whales. The 1915 T214 Victory Tobacco Hooks Wiltse Jersey City team card. I know Leon used to own it a long time ago, but he sold it when he sold his collection through his Heritage auction. I think the current owner is a board member, but I'm not sure who owns it now. I'll never be able to afford it if it becomes available again, but I keep up hope that someday it will reside in my Jersey City team collection.

1930 Baguer Chocolate "Joe McCarthy" in non-beater condition.
I'm not even talking mid-range or high-end, just not beat the hell up. Back stamp still intact without paper loss, front image not a mess, etc... I've had a shot at a few from others and seen some raw on auctions/Ebay/etc over the years, but they've all been beaters. They're not common, but they're not elusively mega-rare. I think I got a good chance at snagging this one day, but not in the past 10-ish years I've been looking one. |

As many of you are aware, I'm working on a master set of Sam Rice cards, and I'm quite far along. There are 2 Rice cards that I would trade my first born for if I could locate and acquire them - they are:
- 1922 Keating Candy. The pop reports show 1 exists, and it's autographed and in a PSA slab. - 1922 Witmor Candy Type 2 (has the vertical back). The pop reports show 1 exists, and it resides in a PSA 1 slab.

My current white whale's....
Cardboard - I'd really like to add a sharp/clean Carl Horner cabinet. I've always admired them, but never pulled the trigger on one. Memorabilia - I've always wanted to own a pre-1980 player or managers World Series ring. A Pirates ring would be a bonus. I will get one someday I'm sure but so far the stars haven't aligned. I don't really have any card related whales.
But I do have an ongoing 1978 project and I think I would consider images of Cito Gaston as a Pirate, Horacio Pina as Phillie and Steve Foucault as a Royal personal white whales. |

Would love to hear more about this Billy, the entire story of this set is pretty fascinating to me. There are practically zero playing days cards of some of the Negro League greats because of the time they came up. At least with guys like Charleston, there are some issues that people can pursue from his time in Cuba.

Three whales for me would be a w600 Wagner, 1907 Seamless Ty Cobb, and a signed Wilt Chamberlain rookie. I think/hope I'll be able to knock off the first one at some point in time; the other two are going to need some luck.

I guess I'll always be chasing my white whale as I don't know what exists out in the wild. I am always searching for any photos, articles or other memorabilia of my grandfather, Hoyt "Speedy" or "Trooper" Webster, who was a boxer in the Army and fought professionally for a brief time after his discharge.
There is one photo of him that was found in his belongings after his death and another of him and other members of the 1930 Ft. Eustis Boxing team that I ran across on eBay. And a copy of a writeup and sketch of him in the 1930 Army Recruiting News. The search continues.

I just picked up my white whale yesterday! A PSA 9 (OC) 1982 Granny Goose Signature series Rickey Henderson. Finding this in the bag of chips would win you a trip to the World Series! Supposedly only one available, but 14 graded by PSA (don't know about other companies), so I don't know what to make of that. I haven't seen one listed for sale anywhere in forever. So very happy even if there might have been something weird going on.
