How Many Different Hall-of-Famers are in Your Collection?

I just counted mine and I have 138. This is including this year's class (Smoltz)

What qualifies (for my purposes)?

First and foremost, the cards must have been produced while the player was an active major league player, not just a coach or manager or minor leaguer.

So, I can't use my T206 Beckley or McGraw, nor would the T206 McGinnity.

Joe Torre doesn't count as he was inducted as a manager.

As far as what determines a card, I think the general acceptance of postcards like the Exhibits and the 1907 Cobb and game cards should be counted.

I'm counting my 1889 ER Williams game card of Pud Galvin (with Dave Orr) as well as my W560 Walter and my 1913 National Game and 1914 Polo Grounds game cards.

If you have a differing opinion on what constitutes a 'card', please feel free to share.

Raymond, for quite a few of us, HOFers are the only players we DO collect. I currently have 292/310 HOFers on career-period cards.

I'm also at 310 as this is the sole focus of my collection -- with the ultimate goal of a "playing years" card for all possible. Which, according to PSA, I'm at 249 of 272. Their "272" is not all encompassing but a good guideline for me at present.

I'm constantly upgrading and downgrading into cards I find more appealing. I'm partial to standard or smaller issues and not a fan of multi-player issues.

I have over 460 cards of HOFers. Some are multiple cards of the same player. I have rookie cards of every HOFer player from 1948 to present. Because I have a finite budget for baseball cards (thanks to my wife), the pre-war HOFers that I have are not necessarily rookies, but rather cards I could afford. Still working on that part of my collection.

Here are my HOF collection checklist criteria:

Prewar: HOFers elected as players; 20th century cards produced during their active playing days including minor leaguers; at least one card per hofer.

Still need: Delehanty, Duffy, Burkett
Prewar I have 221 different cards of hofers elected as players plus 10 hofers elected as other than players. I'm not including any t206's or 33 goudeys - unless I have doubles- since I consider those cards part of their sets and not part of my HOF type collection.

Post war thru 1979: HOFers elected as players; All Regular issue Topps and Bowman cards.

Still need: 49B Paige, Robinson, Snider, Doby, Lemon; 51t Doerr, 51b Mantle, 52t Campy, Wilhelm, Mathews
Post war thru 79 I have 1070 different cards of hofers elected as players plus 16 hofers elected as other than players.

Posts like this make me realize how quaint my collection really is. Very impressed with what I'm hearing here. As for me, I'm probably around 90...though I am mostly a post war guy, so that's about right.

I am negotiating with children's TV Star "The Count" from SezMe street to give you an accurate number.

Funny thing about that guy is that to retain his services, you have to tell him how many cards you need counted

I think I lost track @500 pre-1980 HOFers, only counting the guys in the Topps Era once as I generally pick one I like for my HOF collection.

My prewar collection is about 2/3 slabbed and the other third might get done this year...maybe. See my link below!

I don’t want to sidetrack the OP’s original topic – but I do have a question for those who mainly collect HOF players. (My answer to the original question is about 230 different players, by the way).

The timing of this post is perfect for me, as I have been considering a side project in my collecting pursuits and am looking to build a Hall of Fame type card collection.

I have been sorting through my collection in recent months and noticed that I have nice representation of all Hall of Famers from the 1930s to present and a sprinkling of representation from the 1800s-1920s. While I have never really been into “type collecting,” I thought it might be neat to build a type set of Hall of Famers.

The informal rules I set for myself seem to be along the lines of what I’m reading from others here on the board. Most of the sets posted here seem to focus on Hall of Fame ROOKIE cards. I really have no interest in whether mine are rookies or not - I just want a nice-looking card for each guy.

The question I have for those who have done a set of Hall of Famers - How do you store or display the set? Since I’m dealing with cards of various sizes, I am thinking about keeping the raw cards in UltraPro or Card Saver holders, then slipped into an album with four-pocket pages for easy viewing. I would say that about 90% of my Hall of Famers are raw cards that I’ve purchased over the years, but some of the more expensive ones that I’ve purchased more recently are in TPG holders. (I generally crack cards out of TPG holders, but have kept the higher-priced cards in holders for now – both for protection and in case I decide to sell.)

Brad, I tend to consider myself a HOF Type collector, and as such, have cards of many different sizes in my set. Since many of my more valuable cards are housed in TPG holders, I decided to keep my raw cards in 4-screw holders, so that there would be some consistency (as well as protection). I use a company called BCW Supplies. They have 4-screw holders of all sizes. I posted a link to my collection in post #10 in this thread. For my raw cards, I print mailing labels identifying the year, card type, and player and stick those on the inside of the holder, just above the card.

Thanks, Ken - I looked at your set and I love the consistency. Very nice presentation. I was looking for something that takes up a little bit less space (like an album), but your set has me re-thinking that.
