No, I didn't win a Gold Medal. And I didn't get lucky in an Olympic Village in Germany. And the requirements for contending were only the ownership of a boat or knowing a skipper who needed a crew, but I did receive this useful memento for my participation in this 1972 qualifier and I don't fish.

I curled in the National Champioships in Ogden,UT in 2000. The winner of the championship was the next Olympic team. We actually did very well in the first round and were one of the top teams (16 teams in two brackets, we were 5-2). In the first game of the second round we lost a heartbreaker to the prior Olympic team in an extra end. The thing I remember most was that a local school was let into the arena and was sitting in the upper deck watching the match. A few kids started throwing M&Ms onto the ice. The pieces were too big to affect the rocks but it was a funny scene.

Since we did win a bronze, and 10th place, in Star we did okay. I have met one of the medalists, Peter Dean from Mass. The best yachtsmen on that 1972team sailed out of Wisconsin.

Can't remember if it was 1986 or 87. I won the State tournament at 165lbs. in boxing for the Junior Olympics. Back then it was like a qualifier to try out for the Olympic team and if you placed high enough you could fight internationally.

There have been several sports where, if I had won a whole lot more competitions, I could eventually have become an Olympian. The farthest stretch for me would be 7th grade intramural basketball, where I was a sub. The closest would be....well, I guess that might also be the closest.
I have beaten two U.S. Olympic marathoners in 10K road races, but one was running with his son and the other was leading a pace group. I was also in a Miller Lite commercial which might have aired in Des Moines, but if the hot chicks who were also in the commercial had not laughed when I said "less filling" it could have aired during the Olympics. (just trying to go with the evolving theme).

In 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, I did not participate.
In 1972, I staged a one-man boycott but did not get any publicity. In 1976, I injured myself in a bizarre lawn-maintenance accident and had not fully recovered in time to compete. In 1980, I totally missed the games because of an extended sugar-induced coma. For the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, I did, in fact, make an appearance - just not there. In 1988, I had a sugar-based relapse that I will not discuss. In 1992, I was married and therefore had no control over the balls I usually played with. In 1996, Just before I divorced her, my ex deflated my balls extending my inability to play with them at any competitive level. In 2000, I caught the millennium bug and coughed continually for seven weeks, severely straining my groin. After that, I just decided my future involvement would be limited to non-competitive hamburger consumption.

On a semi-serious note, I had a shot at qualifying for the Olympic trials as a boxer in 1976 when I injured my shoulder. I remember watching the games with my Dad. After seeing Sugar Ray Leonard, he turned to me and said, "Tommy, I gotta tell you... you got a lucky break, you would never lay a glove on that guy". That ended my boxing career.

Yes, Buddy Melges, Bill Bentsen and Bill Allen, gold medalists in the soling class (3 man keelboat) were members of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club, though Melges was the only one from Wisconsin. Melges was born in Elkhorn and lived in Zelda. Allen was from Minneapolis and Bentsen from Chicago. Bentsen graduated undergrad from the same school as my wife, Denison in Ohio.

Here are a couple of photos from my archives.
The first photo shows members of the U.S. Yachting team leaving for Tokyo from O'Hare: Buddy Melges, Bill Bentsen, Peter Barrett, Dick Stearns and Lynn Willians. Melges and Bentsen won a bronze in the Flying Dutchman Class (2 person dinghy where one person is attached to the boat via a rope and trapeze and leans out of the boat over the water to control it). Bentsen was an Assistant Dean at Beloit College at the time. Peter Barrett won a silver in the Finn Class (one person dinghy). He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin Dick Stearns and Lynn Williams won a silver in the Star Class (2 person keelboat). They were both sailmakers. The other photo shows the boat of Melges, Bentsen and Allen on their way to winning the gold medal in the soling class at the 1972 Olympics. The boat on the left, D-64 is skippered by Paul Elvstron who was trying to become the first person to win a gold medal in 5 Olympics in sailing.
