Sporting News Cards and Conlon Cards

Hello guys. This is my first post here. Please advice if I am on the wrong forum and need to go to another section. Anyway, I collect autographed cards from the Sporting News from 1981-1988 and also autographed cards from Megacards Conlon Cards from 1991-1995. All the photography is from the camera of Mr. Charles Martin Conlon of the Sporting News. I would like to know, if there are any collectors here that might collect these types of cards or, where I could be directed to find them. I am also looking for a photograph with the Conlon signature in the back. I have a few for trade mostly common and maybe we could work out some type of trade to include money. I have spent about 20 years off and on collecting them. I hope that there are some collectors of these fine cards.

Welcome to the boards; you will find a lot of collectors of original photos; most hang out in the memorabilia section.

I think you came across a little strong because people usually introduce themselves and what they collect before they start offering to buy/sell/trade, which are all handled on other sections of this message board. Just pay attention to the board you are posting to, and keep sales/trade threads in the right place. This specific board is for discussion of Pre-WWII sports cards, although you can usually post a couple of photographs and postcards in the monthly Pick-up threads.

I look forward to seeing some of your collection.

Thank you swarmee for the comments. The last thing that I would want to do is come on strong. That was not my intent at all. I do apologize for that. I am now on the right forum. The one that has the 1980's. I do not know where, to post your collection here. Any help will be greatly appreciated. "Semper Fi".

Well said, John. There are a lot of great guys on the board and many are willing to help other board members but it's usually better to put your toes in first to test the water.

You know, Al, I really don't see why the Conlon cards could just stay in the PreWWII main forum. After all, they strictly depict pre-war players. They fit in with that era obviously and would complement a pre-war collection, in my mind.

Some of the Conlons are great, in every sense. Some of them suck, and the photo selection jerk must have been high on meth when he chose them. A vivid example that comes to mind is that of the color card of Lewis (Hack) Wilson. Now I had seen a black 'n white shot of Hack used in a Sporting News publication that was exceptionally moving, with a grim determined look on Hack's face while he was at bat, waiting for the pitch. That would have been absolutely perfect. Instead, the moron selected this shot of Hack hurling himself back from a pitch that got a little too high and towards his eyes. You cannot even see Hack's face, which is probably just as well. The pitch should have hit the photo selector instead! Maybe that wouldn't knocked some sense into him, but I doubt it. What a miserable card, and a lost opportunity.

In his defense, among the cards lovingly colorized that stand out to me are the portrait of Lefty Grove as a Philadelphia A, the Joe Jackson as an Indian in about 1916, the side profile of Lou Gehrig at bat in 1927, and furthermore the famous photo of Ty Cobb hurling himself at the Highlanders' third baseman in about 1910-11 are each king-sized gems.

Anyway, glad you like the Conlons. You have good taste in "modern cards".

Thank you Brian for those words. I have collecting Signed Conlon cards for about 20 years. I really enjoy the history that the cards provide. I just need 17 total signed cards. it is less than that, based on when the sets came out and when the ball player died. The Sporting News cards, I need about 55 signed cards.
