Default Another 'Who is this'?

You have to ignore the uniform - I think the original photo looked quite different:

Totally wrong, but the face in profile immediately made me think of Arnold.

Unless skynet sent him back to play ball as a fundraiser?

Once had the book this illustration came from, and remember thinking it was Jim Thorpe, but i do not know. If I can remember the book title(or magazine) I will let you know. Max may know off the top of his head. I think it had to do with generic, random sports of all kinds, not just baseball.

It is almost certainly meant to be generic - I don't think there were any hints at all in the original piece, or in a book, as to who it is based on;in fact, they tried to disguise it.

My first thought was that it looked like a Philadelphia A's uniform, then when you said the uni was generic, I thought it was Thorpe. A couple posts down, someone else concurs. That's my guess, the features are very sharp and distinguished.

This illustration is from a book entitled "Sports and Pastimes " copyright 1914,1927. The caption reads "A sure hitter, An idol of the fans". It is followed by numerous photos including Baker in an A's uniform and
Thorpe but none of the photos are identified ! Not sure why; maybe dodging royalties ? That does look like an A's uniform.

That is all great but I am still looking for I.d
opinions. I wasn't tryimg to stump people on what book it came from - I chose not to provide that info in order to get honest unbiased opinions

I do think it is Chase - I removed the A on his uniform and flipped the pic horizontally.

The editor liked the pic of Chase but wanted to make it anonymous. Also why he flipped the pic horizontal. All speculation.

This is who I have always thought it might be:

I assume it may be possible that the image is flipped.

The shadows on the subject picture are the other way around, which means the picture has been flipped (which, I think, Runscott is saying he did.) So that would mean, the subject picture should not have been flipped, because doing so makes the jersey overlap backwards, meaning the hitter was a lefty, and could by Murphy or Strunk, and not Chase or Thorpe.

Make sense, or am I insane?

ok, I see the confusion. My belief is that a photo of Chase was flipped horizontal so that he would be batting from the incorrect side (thus, disguising the picture theft), an 'A' was added to his uniform and his cap also disguised, but his face was left as-is. That's my thinking. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's why I originally posted this image. Apparently the same was done with other photographs.

Don't think Thorpe was ever considered "A sure hitter" or "An idol of the fans ". Unless the caption is also irrelevant !

This is very interesting. I thought Chase was obvious and I don't see Thorpe at all, but you can't ignore the votes
