I just stumbled upon my August 2004 catalog from Dolloff, from which I ordered 5 Mall Theatre cards, each for under $50.00 (tried on the Burgess-Nash, but they were gone even though I called within an hour of getting the catalog).
![]() Those were the days, as Legendary just sold a lesser condition common for $1554.00. ![]() http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=169065

I used to look forward to getting Mike Wheat's catalogues in the mid to late 90s. In those days he was vehemently opposed to grading.

Wow. Forgot all about Dolloff. Got some '38 Goudeys from him back in the day, and perhaps some Diamond Stars as well.

Every card I ever bought from Mike graded, often better than he had graded it, and I was mostly buying NM or better. Of course, back then he had Tom Witek doing his grading, just an extremely knowledgeable and honest guy from my perspective. Not saying Mike isn't.

I had good luck with Mike Wheat too, as well as Dolloff when it came to describing condition. Note too how we used to buy cards with no scans or even catalog pics, yet we did all right. I must admit though I was often disappointed when buying "NM or stronger" post-war cards from the old SCD dealers-- a lot of hit or miss.
Al-- I recall Dolloff had a pretty good '38 Goudey selection, as well as some '36 Goudeys. I also remember buying my Tom Barker/Fenway Breweries Home Run Baker from him.

I've purchase many cards from Dolloff (New Hampshire) since the 1980's. Excellent guy to deal with.
Also, have had (and still do) many buying and selling deals with Mike Wheat (Pennsylvania) since the 1980's......great guy. TED Z . |

I stopped into Dolloff's shop several times in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His shop was on Route 1.
I had seen his ads in SCD. The several times I stopped into his shop, he couldn't take the time to show me anything. He dismissed me as some young kid that he couldn't be bothered with, because he figured I couldn't afford to buy any of his overpriced cards. Happy to say I never bought anything from him. Built most of my E95 set from Dolloff, one at a time.
Ordered several M101-4s from them as well.

I met Dick Dolloff in the early 80's He was a coin dealer who got into cards and really didnt like talking shop like many other coin dealers. But he did have great stuff. Dick is a old time dealer who really doesnt do shows etc. anymore. The last 10-15 years have passed by many old timers.

On the wall of Dolloff's store he had a sign where what he would charge people to answer questions about his items. It seemed a good way to scare off customers. It worked on me.

He was the rudest person I ever dealt with. And that's saying a ton.

If I recall his SCD ads stated something like "the people who answer the phones can't access the cards which are stored off-site" so don't ask questions. That was a non-starter for me as a T206 collector looking for tougher backs. You can't have customers with no customer service.
