Dear all,
I am interested in branching out in my collecting, and am looking to purchase my first Jackie Robinson card. More important than being a rookie or anything else, I am most interested simply in going after the best looking card period, that I can reasonably afford. Currently, I am leaning towards 1950 Bowman. Any other suggestions? Would love to see your Robinsons... All the best, David Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I always liked the '55 Topps, and still enjoy owning one in rough shape that I purchased for a couple of dollars back when I was a teenager. It was so cool to get a Jackie Robinson card and I felt fortunate to be able to afford one, even if the condition made it much less desirable to others. Have to say that I also like that '52 Topps above in this thread.

I lot of the mid 50's cards looks like Jackie with the exact same pose (just different background). That being said, if you can afford, you really need to pick up a nice 1948 Leaf.
This scan is of the reprint, but you get the gist... |

I like the '47 Bond Bread portrait! '52 Topps is a close second. I'm certainly partial to portrait cards. Anything horizontal ('55 and '56 Topps, for instance) are just plain ugly, in my opinion.

1956 Topps, then 1950 Bowman, then 1955 topps. He actually has a lot of cool cards.

These are far from his best looking cards, but they are his toughest Topps "cards" to get....55 and 56 Topps Hocus Focus . I recently won a REA lot that has a better 55 ( smaller of the two)

I disagree with you Bobby, the 1949 Leaf may be the most expensive, but it is ugly. Just a bad photo of Jackie, with a sleepy eye or stoned look on his face.

IMO, as for Topps and Bowman, the only card I do like of Jackie is the '50 Bowman. It's probably because I am partial to action shots, but I just find most of the others ugly. The aforementioned issues like Bond Bread and Berk Ross are much better than Topps and Bowman.

David,
In choosing the 1950 Bowman, you're definitely on the right track. Make yourself be patient and scour the Net and anywhere else you can. Since this carries a full length action pose of Jackie, try your best to get one where the picture registry is very crisp and focused, with good strong colors. If it's centered, that's super, but centering is such a valued characteristic it will just jack the price way up. I would go with graded EXCELLENT to EX-MT to keep the cost down, but resale value stable. I cannot stress picture quality and strong colors enough. Your enjoyment of the card will be enhanced when you can clearly see the fine features of the painted image (Bowman must have used a black 'n white photo as a base to this one). Wishing you the very best on your hunt for your first Jackie Robinson card. ---Brian Powell |

I prefer the 1952 Topps or the 1954 Topps. For oddball items I've always liked this mail response card:

Thank you all for sharing your wonderful cards, and for your great advice. Still loving the 1950 Bowman, but also the affordability and beauty of the 1956 topps. I might just have to go after them both... Would make for really a nice combination of a batting pose, a portrait, plus Jackie slidin' into home!

Yet another vote here for the 1950 Bowman. I recently wanted to add a Jackie card to my collection and chose the 50B to represent him. For me, it's the aesthetic winner.

I bought my 48/49 leaf R/C-seems a few months ago...I love it.
But i gotta admit the Bowman R/C is nice. This is NOT mine, but one that is currently at Auction. Its at under 1k currently...Defintely a nice addition! (despite o/c LtoR) I love the vibrant yellow color.
