Question about 2 versions of a Standard Biscuit

Is either SGC or PSA wrong on dating or were 2 cards made due to trade or what? They are very rare so hard to research, thanks...backs are same except PSA says 80 in set and SGC says 200...SGC one is more cream-colored... Isn't the SGC one a D350-1 from 1916?

Off the top of my head I believe the one on the left is actually a D350-3 Stand Biscuit from 1921. The one on the right is a D350-1 from 1916 that is just like the M101-4/5 sets. But I've been wrong before.

Actually even the books have these sets wrong (at least according to the ACC)...

According to the ACC...
D350-1 is a set of 80 cards (what SCD calls D350-3), your un-numbered Hooper is from this set of cards and they date from early 1921 and parallels the Holsum Bread Type 2 set (similar to E121).

D350-2 is a set of 200 small cards (what SCD calls D350-1), your #83 Hooper is from this set, it dates to 1916 and is a version of M101-5.

The ACC has no D350-3 set cataloged (SCD calls the set that parallels the E135 Collins-McCarthy and Boston Store cards as D350-2), these date to 1917.

With all that being said SCD has called these the following for so long it has become the "accepted numbers"...

-D350-1 are small M101-5 like cards
-D350-2 are larger E135/Boston Store like cards
-D350-3 are also larger E121 like cards

Just as an FYI, I actually like SCD's numbering of these better than the ACC as they are put in "issue order" as opposed to when they were cataloged...


The ACC was never really interested in listing anything based on date of issue within a manufacturer, for example they cataloged the following...
D327 is the 1920-21 Holsum Bread set
D328 is the 1917 H. Weil Baking set
D329 is the 1916 H. Weil Baking set

Kind of sloppy for SGC to have missed the date on that Hooper using the new flip-- the 1916 issue date has been accepted for quite a long time.

Greg, if you aren't confused yet, there are actually two versions of D350-1. The SGC card you show lines up with the m101-5 set. An analog to m101-4 also would have been printed, identical except for card number, which would read 84.


EDITED TO ADD" You also may find two versions of the D350-3 set, one which claims "Each set contains 80 photographs" and the other saying "There are 80 the set".

The D350-1s are smaller, the other two are the same size.

Greg, hopefully you subscribe to the Old Cardboard Magazine - if you don't, I highly recommend this pub. In the Fall 2011 Issue #26 of OC, you will find Rhett's comprehensive and very informative article re the E121 and related sets, in which there are pictures of the 3 different backs of the 1921 Standard Biscuit cards (D350-3); I frequently refer to Rhett's masterpiece as I work on my type-card collection.
