I'm trying to complete the N28 set beyond baseball. That sent me to the Goodwin catalog, which often has the right stuff. But not this time
Take a look at the Goodwin catalog's blurb on its N28 Dempsey: http://goodwinandco.com/1887-N28-All...-LOT27523.aspx But the Manassa Mauler was born in 1895, eight years after the production of the N28 set. This is Jack ("Nonpareil") Dempsey, an excellent fighter of the Nineteenth Century. C'mon guys, vet your material before committing it to gloss. |

Funny the way his Old Judge, and Allen & Ginter cards always sell for a premium.

William Harrison Dempsey was only 4 months old when the Nonpareil died.

The other Jack Dempsey was a LEGENDARY figure in American history. There are many, many, MANY well respected top fighters in card sets from the late 19th/early 20th century that do not command the premium that his cards command. I believe that would be the legendary Jack Dempsey lol |

Dave,
Judging by your avatar, you are likely MUCH more knowledgeable about boxing and boxing cards than I am. Am I imagining that premium on the 19th century Jack Dempsey cards as if he was the "other" Jack Dempsey? Last edited by slipk1068; 05-07-2014 at 03:09 PM. |

I do not believe the likeness in name created a premium on Jack "Nonpareil" Dempsey. His cards go for a premium because he was a great fighter, not just well respected, very famous in his time, up there with Sullivan, . I personally value his cards very highly second only to Sullivan, then Corbett. (In terms of 19th century). Thats just my opinion

Auction house mistakes aside, and believe or not, this is a very common mistake, the name obviously doesn't hurt the value of his cards. However, he shouldn't be classified as a common either. Obviously John L. is the king of this era as far as collectors go, but "Non-Pariel" Dempsey stuff should probably be in the next level down with the Bob Fitzsimmons, Peter Jacksons, George Dixon's, George Godfrey and Corbetts of the world. ...................and when I say "Corbett", I don't mean Young Corbett I, or Young Corbett II, or even Young Corbett III..........and when I say "George Godfrey", I don't mean the genial 1920's-30's Heavyweight who sparred with Jack Dempsey, and turned Primo Carnera into a whithering little boy on the canvas, with a low blow, during a bout he was supposed to throw, so figured he'd go out in style, while saving as much face as possible. .......and when I say Peter Jacks..................ah, you get it. It does get confusing, and there are a ton of shared names in the sport... many between equally good (or close to it) fighters. |
