I don't think I will be outing an auction by saying that Kelly, Delahanty (spelled correctly), Ewing and Gibson (Josh, not Bob

Wow..that Josh Gibson/Paige piece is a rarity. I would have no confidence in buying a Josh Gibson piece though. His simple signature plus the lack of exemplars that exist out there make it difficult to authenticate.

I though Satchel was spelled with one "L."

That's a good point.
Either that's an extra "e" or "l", but either way it clearly is an extra letter. |

For many years throughout his career, he spelled it Satchell, it is not a misspelling. Some time after he retired he adjusted it to the post career more common spelling Satchel. Here is one of my documents of his with this spelling from the early 1950's....This is the more rare and desired vintage version of his signature.
Any questions, please feel free to ask. http://postimg.org/image/60rofvpz3/ |

I missed out on a spectacular Paige piece because I thought the same way.

Wow, Thanks for sharing Doc.
Even Ron K's book seems to indicate the 2-L version to be Secretarial in nature. I don't think a legal document would be signed by another person (at least not legally) |

There are also Freddie Lindstrom autographs signed "Freddy" and Jimmie Foxx signed "Jimmy" that are fine. I'm sure there are others but having trouble remembering them. |

All the items except for the Gibson have been pulled from the auction. I wonder if authenticity issues are saving for another auction.

It could be for a few reasons including authenticity, but we tend to sometimes forget could it be a provenance or " ownership trail" issue ( that is from a questionable background, polite way of saying stolen). The problem with the old stuff is not just authenticity, since there are so few samples of some of this stuff who can truly say with 100% certainty what is real and what is not; but also with the chain of ownership, provenance or the sourcing of such items.
I hope we do find out the reasons. |
