Actually, it looks like there was a third bidder at +$600. That is a sweet card from what I thought was still an under-appreciated set.

Winner bid twice, upping his own high bid (well before auction end).. Wonder what his max was.
I was under bidder by $0.88 on Bancroft.. But decided to stop there, knowing the next bid would've won it. |

This is a case of three bidders blowing up the value, it looks like a pretty normal bidding pattern to me. Doug Last edited by doug.goodman; 03-10-2014 at 03:04 AM. |

I was watching as well (but from afar). Many would consider this and his 1921 Koester's Bread as his rookie card ... The mislabeled "Pep Young" 1919-21 W514 is not a popular choice.
I certainly didn't expect it to go for $600+

I just found out who this player was. That's a big price.

Must be something about Youngs. A few months ago I bought an E120 Youngs in a PSA 4 or 4.5. Bad things happened and I had to turn around and sell it much too quick. I asked close to what I paid for it on the BST here, but no luck. Dumped it on ebay as a last resort and wound up getting about 2.5x what I was asking here.

Possibly its relatively high condition was a contributing factor...National Caramels are a normally sickly looking group with a large majority horribly miscut.

![]() Definitely some good pre-eBay deals to be had here on occasion... recent E120 Pie Traynor prices have seemed pretty nuts to me as well and remember one (think a 4) offered here for like $200 before several of the recent eBay sales. |

How do you know what their max was?

If you're losing by less than the minimum bid, then you know what someone bid.
For instance. If I bid $100 and the minimum bid was $1 and the high bid was 100.88, then I would have been ahead with the next bid

Here is an actual case of two registry dorks (oops I mean bidders) blowing up the value of a slab (oops, I mean a card) :
