Happen to come across this photo of Ruth knocked out. I never saw this before. Anyone know the story behind this?

I found that pic without any explanation attached to it. Thanks for the quick turnaround.
It's a great picture. Would love to purchase a copy of that and have it framed. |

Gee Howard. What did The Babe ever do to you?
That is a cool picture. The first games I went to as a kid were at Griffith Stadium. I remember that corner. Virtually no foul territory. |

I believe that when the Yanks played in the Polo grounds Babe often played center field as he had a habit of running into the short left and right field walls.

That big son-of-a-bitch finally found something that hit harder than he did.

"This being 1924, they splashed cold water on Ruth's face to wake him up. Manager Miller Huggins wanted to take him out, but Ruth refused, finishing the game 3-for-3—and playing the second game of the double-header, despite a noticeable limp. Ruth would start every game that season."
Nowadays they would have sent him for x-rays, a ct scan and an mri and then 15 day DLed him at the slightest hint of a limp.

![]() But you're right. If that happened today, he'd be on the DL for sure, ushered from one specialist to another on a near daily basis.

I find something else in the picture very interesting. As a studier (is that a word?) of Negro League history, DC was an epicenter of change some years later with Homestead and DC negro league teams pulling more fans than the Senators (Sometimes 40,000 to 20,000 easy), interesting to note the African/American fans in the stands at such volume....some 20 years before the economic impacts were truly felt
