I found this signed 1933 Goudey Luke Sewell today in a collection that's new to the hobby. I've never collected much in the way of autographed cards, so perhaps Sewell signed all of his '33 Goudey cards this way: "This is Steve O'Neil"
I thought it unusual enough to share. Last edited by Rob D.; 03-09-2013 at 08:10 PM. |

I just reread the title of my post and realized it might seem like I'm questioning whether the card itself is unusual. I'm actually wondering whether Sewell signed most of his '33 Goudeys with this inscription. (Matt's post shows Luke was 100 percent correct.)

I don't know anything about how Luke usually signed Goudeys, but that is interesting. Luke knew that wasn't him and maybe was a bit ticked off about it. Very cool autograph!

Really neat card. Reminds me a lot of my Snodgrass batting. Have often wondered why Fred said this on his batting pose. Maybe he thougt he was signing the catching pose this way? He was, after all, remembered for being a centerfielder.

Interesting !! Nice pick up Rob.
I don't know enough about '33 Goudey's, but is this a new discovery (that the image is O'Neil and not Sewell)? Sincerely, Clayton |

I have often wondered that Fred got a card as a catcher. He only caught 6 games over a three year period. Mostly a CF, but filled in everywhere as needed.

Rob, that's very cool!
In the early 80's I sent Cool Papa Bell a small 1970's card set of him, telling him to sign 1 or 2 and keep the rest for himself. He signed each one and corrected the mistakes of the batting averages & steals that were wrong. |

Rob,
Your killing me here! thats the last signed goudey I need to have all the players that died back to 1974. Any chance you are going to be selling it? Ive seen two reprints signed this way as well. Thanks sean ![]() |

I just read your article from Helmar blog about this subject. I was searching for "1933 Goudey signed" which took me to that blog, then this thread. Really enjoyed your article, it is very interesting to see how these cards were really worthless awhile ago, now you can hardly afford to buy one. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for your article, it was very insightful.

The late Emanuel Steward used to do that with his 1991 Ringside cards. I handed him one to sign and wondered what he was doing--he was correcting the typos.
