I have only owned two - a Wagner ten years ago, and this one that I picked up last night. Actually, they might be the same one

Not quite the player that Wags or Johnson was...but he did catch 3 no hitters in his career. Including one from Johnson!

Hi-
Below are the two I have. One is an Al Bridwell royalty check for The Glory of Their Times. It is a postwar check but from a prewar player, and related to a classic book. The second one is a bit of a stretch. It is definitely prewar as it dates to 1868. It is signed by Elihu Phinney. He was the son of the owner of the farm where the first game was supposed to have been played according to the Mill's commission. He was also named as one of the players in the first game (I believe this to be Elihu Phinney III, but I could be wrong as I do not know when Elihu Phinney Jr died). The family farm is part of the Hall of Fame grounds. I wish I could find a 19th century pay check for a major leaguer! Alan |

Carl Hubbell pay check from the NY Giants, he was an exec with the team for many years after his retirement.
I have not seen another item with the Carl O. Hubbell signature , though I assume they do exist.

According to the Freeman's Journal of Cooperstown, Phinney, Jr. died in 1863. So that check would be Elihu Phinney III. |

FWIW, checks from "The Meal Ticket's" personal checking account were always Carl O. Hubbell. His name was embossed on his checks this way and that's the way he signed them based on the ones that I've seen through the years. In my personal collection I own one that is signed this way from 1980. Last edited by Scott Garner; 12-01-2013 at 05:27 AM. |

I love seeing checks. There are none in my collection yet, thinking of adding a few in the next year.
Thanks for posting them. |

This is not baseball, but still pre-WWII. I received this in the mail from Italy today. Appears to be payment for something to do with automobiles. This is signed by Nedo Nadi (1894-1940). One of the greatest fencers of all time, he won 6 gold medals between the 1912 and 1920 Olympics. At the 1920 games he won 5 gold medals, winning in every event he competed in - individual foil and sabre and team foil, sabre and épée. He also fought for Italy in WWI. This is also quite large 9 3/4 x 4.

Adam, nice O'Doul check, I like the Bank Of Tokyo on it since he had such strong ties to Japanese baseball.
Here's my O'Doul check w/ a pix of Lefty w/ the Dimaggio's and Ty Cobb. ![]() Last edited by Jay Wolt; 12-01-2013 at 09:43 AM. |

Thanks Tom! I was hoping it was Elihu Phinney III as he is the one named as a player in the "first" game (according to the Mill's commission). I really appreciate the information.

Here are a few of my favorites out of my collection:
1) Frank "Noodles" Hahn 1903 signed Cincinnati Reds pay voucher. Noodles Hahn threw the 1st no-hitter of the 20th century in 1900. 2) Leslie Ambrose (aka "Bullet Joe") Bush. Bullet Joe pitched a no-hitter in 1916. 3) "Sad" Sam Jones 1925 Yankees payroll check also signed by E. Barrow and Jacob Ruppert. Sad Sam pitched a no-no in 1923. 4) No player connection, but here is a cool 1883 check from Cooperstown , NY. Fun to look at, never the less. Enjoy!
