I think this has been discussed here before, but what are some safes that you guys recommend for the home? Something substantial, not a Sentry safe from target.

A lot of different safes out there. With a lot of different uses. You need to decide why you want to have a safe. Do you want to protect your cards and valuables from theft or from fire or both. If you want to protect them from fire I would recommend a data safe. They protect everything and dont let the temp. get above 100 deg. inside. They are however very expensive. Most regular safes only protect to 350 deg. Plastic does not catch fire at 350 but I bet it will melt. That would do some harm to cards though.
If you want one just to stop theft, I would get a safety deposit box at the bank. I for one will probably open my safe if a gun is stuck in my face. I have a very large Phoenix safe that is a 100 deg safe and weighs 1800 lbs. It cost a lot though!! No one will walk off with it. It took 5 of us 45 min. just to move it 50 ft. in the house with it on a dolly. |

I bought a used jewelers safe that weighs 1200 lbs and had a tow truck bring it into a room specially made for it. And I still keep my most valuable cards in a bank safe deposit box. But I would check at a safe store to see what used ones they have for sale, before buying brand new. They are just as good as new and can be had for a lot less. Mine was less than half of what a new one would have cost.

Thanks guys. it's for fire and general safe-keeping. I live in a building with 24 hour security & doormen, so i'm less concerned about theft.
Leon- any names or companies that you can think of that have used safes? I'd consider that. |
