Let's show some love to "Murderers' Row"

The 1927 New York Yankees might be the greatest offensive team in the history of baseball. The lineup, known as "Murderers' Row", gave opposing pitchers nightmares. As a team, the Bronx Bombers hit .307, scoring an incredible 976 runs in 144 games (6.8 runs per game!). Four of the first six batters in the lineup are immortalized as members of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, and a fifth may one day be enshrined.

Center Fielder Earl Combs was the leadoff hitter. "The Kentucky Colonel" hit .356 while leading the American League with 231 hits and 23 triples. He scored 137 times in 1927. Shortstop Mark Koenig hit .285 and scored 99 runs. After Koenig, things got particularly hairy for the other team's hurler. Right Fielder Babe Ruth batted third, hitting .356 with a new Major League Record of 60 home runs. "The Bambino" drove in 164 runs and tallied 417 total bases. Next up was the "Iron Horse", Lou Gehrig, who hit .373 with 47 home runs, leading the American league with 52 doubles and 175 RBI. 117 of Gehrig's 218 hits went for extra bases, and he led the league with 447 total bases. Bob Meusel hit .337 while driving in 103 runs. After Meusel, Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri hit .309 with 18 home runs and 102 RBI. Third baseman Joe Dugan batted seventh, hitting .269, and catcher Pat Collins hit eighth, hitting .275.

No doubt, Matt. I can't imagine being a pitcher in the AL back then, having to face the Yankees.

Everybody freaked out about Miguel Cabrera's 2013 season. He hit .348 with 44 HR and a 1.078 OPS. That's an average season for Ruth or Gehrig. Ruth's career OPS was 1.164, and Gehrig's was 1.080.

MVSNYC, I wanted to ask you what is written on your chair's engraving plate? Unfortunately, I never made it to a game at Yankees Stadium, so I'm not familiar with them. What a great piece of history to own, though!

Jeff, you have some really nice pieces, and I appreciate your sharing them. I think next to the 1933 Goudey cards, the '21 Exhibit card is my favorite Babe Ruth. One thing I am curious about, however, is the lack of a designation for the set by Jefferson Burdick. Whenever I see an Exhibit card in a PSA or SGC slab, there's no catalog identifier. In looking for information about the set, PSA described this as the first set of "arcade cards" released by the Exhibit Supply Company. My understanding is that arcade cards fit in the W category, so why would this set not be included in his cataloging?

David, please excuse my jealousy here. Having my absolute favorite Lou Gehrig card is one thing. Having it autographed is quite another. I tip my hat to you, sir.

I also like the Ruth, not only because the Bambino has signed it, but the photo itself is great. It's an early example of the classic Yankee pinstripes. I'd love to own it without the signature, even if it were a second generation photo.

Rickyy, very nice. As I said before, I really love the Exhibits cards. I just wish that Shoeless Joe Jackson had somehow been included in the set.

What year was this taken? It would be between '35 and '37 as the Babe's last year was '34, and Lazzeri's last season with the Yankees was '37.

Thanks alot bill. The picture was taken 1928. I think out of all my photos I like this one the best. Just the looks on these guys faces before they played is priceless.

1928, really? Where was the Babe when this shot was being taken, sitting off to the side eating a hot dog?

I should have counted the seven players, allowing that it could have been earlier . But the photo is really sharp. It's a study in intensity. They just look... intimidating.

lol..He was probably eating two hot dogs with everything on it. The back of the photo indicates this was taken the same day of the world series vs the cardinals at yankee stadium.
