Hall of Famer pitcher Mickey Welch during his days as a star outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics. Great on defense in center field!

Oh well, I guess snipers can tell the difference between an N167 HOF'er and an N172 common. Still went for almost 3x too much to some lucky bidder

I heard that he invented Welch's Grape Jelly also. So much for quality control at SGC.

Great N167 large Keith!
I think the buyer of the "Mickey Welsh" should be ok; SGC covers stupid in their guarantee. |

Whoever got the Wilbert Robinson landed quite a steal last night at $1400 for a SGC 40 with a decent image. The auctioneer would have been better off doing the large cards like Robinson and John Ewing first so that the losers of those auctions would stick around filter money to the other cards. By putting the expensive cards towards the end, other bidders already had placed money in their other pickups and so no longer had funds for the major cards.

Which Robinson? I didn't see one, there was a nice Bid McPhee that sold for 3300?

Some of the cards seemed to be graded higher then usual, for the condition, based on what I'm used to seeing from SGC. |

With all due respect to Just Collect, the borders on an SGC flip aren't that dark.

![]() ![]() Also, was able to get this one from that auction. All of the cards were from the same collection, if I understood correctly. The photos looked mostly sharp across all of the cards. I'll make some scans of these when they arrive. I really liked the Farmer Vaughn and the Robinson, also. The previous owner had some good cards for sure. |

Just Collect didn't alter the hue of the scans... props to them for that!

I placed 18 bids on those OJs last night and lost on 16 of them. On some I was close. On others I got completely blown away. I was thrilled to land the Robinson for the price (I still had some room in my top bid). I wanted to add an OJ Robinson, and that pose was my favorite. Less often seen, I think, than the hands head high. The other one I got was Seward for a fairly nice price:

Blair, you're a shark! That Robinson is worth in the 2000-2500 range, imo, if not more. Great pose, too. Congrats on the pickup! You did well!

Rookie question...can someone explain to me the high value on the John Ewing, and (it seems to me) other Louisville OJs? I understand there were no 1887 Louisville cards, so I imagine that makes that team somewhat tougher, but I think that applies to quite a few other teams.
Are Louisville cards just more popular, or are they particularly scarce for some reason? Any info would be appreciated so I can understand this set better. Cheers, Blair

Blair,
Here is an old thread on n172 Louisville with some good information and great pics. In the case of the Ewing, I bought it because I thought it looked cool and I know that there are a number of collectors that bid high on Louisville cards, especially on the cards of popular players who do not surface very often. Nice grab on the Robinson Hofer. www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=88410 |

The Ewing card you got is fantastic - the image is exceptional! But I did not know the market for the card (or the Louisville team), so was a bit surprised by the price. Great pickup by you!!! Cheers, Blair
