Since there was a fire sale today (just kidding Dave) on the BST with some Kalamazoo Bats cards why not post some, if ya' got 'em? Team, single player, double player.....I'm not picky.....and this one was bought from a board member several years ago...It's interesting how many trades and sales we do with other board members, on or off the board.......

Beautiful card. I'm relatively unfamiliar with them. I love the two players on the card. Do a lot have 2 players on them?

I know there are at least several with 2 players. It's my type for the set and I don't know a lot about them otherwise...except they are neat....I never get tired of seeing this one too. Though it has a bad scan the image is one of the best I have ever seen on a 19th century card. Even discriminating collectors like this one and if I am not mistaking at least 2 board members owned it before me....

Here's mine. Received these from a buddy on the board member as well.
Including a back scan of the Irwin/Maul to show why Sgc gave it a 10??
I think they were a bit to harsh on it. Displays like an NM card......

is there a distinction between the 1886 and 1887 KB? It seems that SGC has given both dates pretty loosely. Any help on the distinction (if any) would be appreciated.

The NY Kalamazoo bats were likely 1886 due to the existence of the Corcoran card. The real expert knowledge on this set would have to come from Jay Miller. Maybe he will sound off here.

If memory serves, Jay once told me the NY players were issued the year before the Philadelphia ones. Clearly, the NY players were part of an extremely small print run, while the Philadelphia ones were mass produced. Since one needed to accumulate several hundred and redeem them for one of their great prizes (like a meerschaum pipe or a nifty umbrella) they must have been pretty easy to find.

Barry - if we don't know that anyone actually had enough to redeem, we don't really know how plentiful they were. All we know is that the intention was to make them so plentiful that people could get enough to redeem. That may have happened, or maybe they didn't sell, and the cost of production/distribution wasn't worth it so they canceled the run.

Barry--I believe the NY players were issued in 1886. The exception is Esterbrooke who I think was added in early 1887. The Philadelphia players are not all common (although many are). Several involving Athletics players such as Milligan and Larkin, Seward and the Lyons that KO bought on Ebay are thought to be unique.

I also believe the cards with the ad back are much tougher to find compared to the more common blank
back variation since these were the only ones Charles Gross & Co found eligible to be sent in for
the prizes they offered on the reverse. Leon, do any of the ones you own have the ad back or are they blank?
Lew Lipset states a premium of 25% to 30% can be added to cards that have the ad back.

Yes, ad backs are tougher, no doubt.

The redemption was always a curiosity to me. Did anyone in America actually accumulate the 400 needed to get that umbrella? And keep in mind, there was no stipulation you had to send in baseball players, just Kalamazoo Bats, so maybe 390 actresses and 10 baseball players would have sufficed.

But no matter how you slice it, that's one expensive umbrella! I'd rather redeem the umbrella and get my 400 cards back.

I have two ty cobbs an one kalamazoo bats trying to see if they are real got them from some old guy who had no intention on selling them but because I asked rather or not he had any old cards for sale he then pulled out 3 cards each was in a clear screwed down case the k-bats is from 1887 the 2 cobbs are from 1910 an the other is a rookie 19? under a microscope looking very very close the cards show lines not dots. the small ty cobbs are from a caramel candy package an the k-bats are from tabacco will post photos plz help ive done hrs of research an it seems to be that it was done with more than one type of printing,,the k-bats was photo cards ect my concern is why am I see lines? they lines can only be seen under a hi micro scope
