Good question...most are overpriced in my opinion but there's definitely some that are underpriced. A few that come to mind:
-'66 SPs...especially Choo Choo Coleman (#561), Hoerner RC (#544), and G Jackson RC (#591). -The aforementioned '64 Flood -Not a specific card but I think Bobby Richardson is generally underpriced. I don't think he books except for his rookie card and they usually demand a premium Interested to see what other folks mention. |

The 66 Grant Jackson was the first that came to mind. By a mile.
Others: 68 Lee May, 67 high # NL rookie stars (can't remember players, definitely no names), 60 Pirates team card. |

I'll agree on the 66 Grant Jackson...throw in the Mahafie and the Perranoski. Putting that set together was difficult, and it's pretty rare when ANY Topps card simply has NOTHING on Ebay at times. Even the 52 Mantle always has 10 or so cards to choose from. Some of those 66's would be empty...crazy.
In the 65's it is strange, but the Bob Uecker is a card that is routinely above book, and yes, the 61 high numbers. Putting sets together, here is a list of cards I have found difficult and had to overpay or wait on - 1954 Topps - Wally Moon 1954 Topps - Johnny Sain 1957 Topps - Mid Series (Tough) 1957 Topps - Ted Klewsuski 1961 Topps - High Numbers 1964 Topps - Curt Flood (WHY???) 1965 Topps - Mel Stottlemeyer 1965 Topps - Bob Uecker 1965 Topps - Richie Allen 1966 Topps - Horace Clark 1966 Topps - Grant Jackson 1966 Topps - Ron Perranoski 1966 Topps - Art Mahafie 1970 Topps - Seattle Pilots Team 1971 Topps - Lou Brock 1973 Topps - Gary Mathews RC Just a few I had to overpay or had difficulty locating. I am perplexed on the 64 Curt Flood...I still need the card and can't find one anywhere but Ebay..there are plenty available, but 30-$50??? WHY?

I'll buy them all day long at high book price!!!! Even in poor condition.
1966 591 also came to mind. Still don't understand why that one goes for more than all the other SPs though. There is no logical reason that I've ever heard. Cheers, Patrick |

I think I recall a discussion in another thread about some guy hoarding the 64 Floods. Basically bought everything that came up for sale and really affected the market for that card. Why he did or is doing that is beyond me.

When building sets, I buy lots/part sets of cards for the year I am working on. I have come across a fair number of 64 Floods in these lots and have sold them off on ebay. Over the past 2 years I have sold 11 different 1964 Floods that I have received in these various lots. For me, 6 of the 11 I sold were to the same buyer. In flipping through his feedback, he appears to be the person buying as many copies of this card as possible.

That '66 Hoerner RC drove me crazy for a long time. I finally picked it up but paid higher than I wanted.

I wonder how much is conditoin scarcity and how much is this may have been this collectors' favorite player and this was the 1sr Cardinals World Series victory in that collectors lifetime.

I built sets back to 59. The 66 and 67 high's (and 61 as well) were by far the toughest part of that exercise. But the most fun, too! |

My editor is very active on Facebook and we have gotten so much reaction to this article already and I've even recieved private emails on this article. The card you are referring to is the 1967 Jim Shellenback/Ron Willis Card (Willis was the Cardinal). Keep this thread going as knowing what cards cause us problems is a good start towards continuing to settle these old hobby mysteries Rich |

Cool article. When did you work for John? I used to spend a great deal of time at JKJ (and before that at the Rte 1 flea market) back in the day and have great memories of the store
