How many of the Detroit Free Press Tigers make a set ? Here on old cardboard web site under sets it states (18) with Joe Louis card considered by many as part of the set (19). But in SCD Standard Catalog of BB Cards they list on page 124 (26 players). |

Mike, good question. We stand by our checklist on the Old Cardboard website at http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m120/m120.asp?cardsetID=975. A full set gallery is also provided. |

Eight or nine of these were in eBay auctions last February or March. I know the winner of most and none were the ones you listed. I was happy with the Cochrane I won and wish that I had gone for more. They are beautiful: |

Bump.
I still haven't seen anyone verify the existence of the other 7 cards listed in the Standard Catalog. Bob - It's time to correct the Catalog. I'll email Bob Lemke so he can get it straight for next edition. Thanks Mike |

If we don't get confirmation of the existence of the disputed players by the deadline for the 2011 book, we'll excise them.

Bob, while we are here and we are talking about Detroit Tigers issues there is another set that needs some serious cleaning up. I am 100% convinced the 1939 Michigan Sportservice set doesn't have as many cards in it as your checklist would indicate. I keep seeing the same players over and over again while I have never spoken to anyone that can confirm the existence of many of the others (notably the Greenberg and Newhouser)...
Confirmed to exist: Beau Bell Tommy Bridges Pinky Higgins Red Kress Buck Newsom Birdie Tebbetts Not confirmed to exist: Earl Averill Dick Bartell Al Benton Frank Croucher Pete Fox Charlie Gehringer Hank Greenberg John Gorsica Fred Hutchinson Barney McCoskey Archie McCain Hal Newhouser Schoolboy Rowe Dizzy Trout Rudy York

Also Bob, there is another somewhat related supplement issue that is not yet listed that has been known for a little bit. I own the Greenberg and have seen the Gehringer (I'm unsure how extensive the set is)...
c.1935 Detroit Sunday Times Supplement (these are pretty big - roughly the size of the Blum's Bulletin set) Here's the Greenberg: -Rhett

Rhett: Ref 1939 Michigan Sportservice. The Barney McCoskey card is on ebay right now ( item # 370292046055). So the confirmed list is at 7 cards, based on the 6 you already listed as existing.

In regard to the 1939 Michigan Sportservice cards, I am sure there are a few from that list that do exist, the ones I listed above are the ones I have personally owned. That being said I believe the set will consist of likely 7-10 cards--not the 21 or so they list in the SCD.

Would you happen to know if Tommy Bridges was included in this issue?

Thanks, Brian and wow, Leon, that's a nice poster! I haven't seen this set--do you know what size these cards are? Does anyone have the complete set? Thanks, Doug

I think there might be a few complete sets out there. I do think Bridges is in the set but haven't double checked to be sure. The cards are about 3 x 5....and the envelope they were sent in....

If anyone can confirm/deny Bridge's inclusion in this set I would be obliged. Although Leon's poster features him, I have yet to see an example or find him listed on a checklist.

As the poster indicates there are 23 in the set. I have 20 of the 23. This set has been listed in catalogs as "1934 Detroit tigers Team Issue" , but the poster has ( Newton Annis Furs).
Enclosed is the Tommy Bridges card from that set.

Lots of cool Detroit Tigers stuff from the 1930s in this thread! Here's a card of the 1929 Tiger team I picked up awhile ago, I don't know anything about it but I like it.

1933-36 is a gold mine for vintage Tigers' material. There are a ton of regional sets, premiums, pins, etc. Even national releases seem to be Detroit heavy during this span. Lots of great characters too: Schoolboy, Greenberg, Mickey C. It's a shame that squad doesn't carry the reverence or mystique that the Gashouse Gang, 50's Giants, or Brooklyn Bums reserve. You could argue that the mid-30's are the high water mark of the franchise. Of course, I'm biased.

Troy : That Detroit team photo you posted above is from the 1975 Sport Hobbyist Team Composities. Listed on Page 375 of the 2012 Standard Catalog of Vintage BB Cards. Value listed as $ 6.
