NY Giants manager John J. McGraw was born in the tiny town of Truxton New York (population about 1100). In August of 1938 the NY Giants took time out from the regular season to play a memorial baseball game in Truxton against a team of local players and college kids called the Truxton Giants. The game was to raise funds for a McGraw monument.
We offer the cover of the program for that game, autographed in pencil by many of the Giants who participated.
At the top center is an autograph of Mel Ott, the first National Leaguer to hit 500 home runs. Ott died in 1958 at the age of 49.
There are some other tough autographs here, including Bill Cissell who died in 1949, Jimmie Ripple who died in 1959, and Frank Snyder who died in 1962. Other signatures include Hall of Famers Bill Terry and Travis Jackson, John McCarthy, Sam Leslie, John Wittig, Hank Lieber, and Alex Kampouris.
The fascinating story about the game and the McGraw monument that still stands in Truxton is available here.
