Found this great and unique ball on Ebay. Title & description omitted the # 1 signature on there: HOFer Miller Huggins, and Col. Ruppert.
Granted of all the sigs on the ball, the M.J. Huggins is probably the most faint, but it's there, he had this ball in his hands and signed it, along with an amazing group of players. The seller didn't really know what they had, my gain ; ) The ball was made out to an unknown person and signed from Jack Hendricks, who also dated the ball (A big thank you to him for that), March 31st, 1927. So he by doing that dates the ball to the '27 Yankees. Must have been a spring training game or something. The names on the ball are an amazingly unique group: REDS: Jack Hendricks Mgr. Reds HOFer George "High Pockets" Kelly Ethan Allen - after baseball invented the game All-Star Baseball, and coached George H.W. Bush at Yale Adolfo Luque - The Pride of Havana - played in 1919 World Series vs. Black Sox Babe Pinelli -wrong Babe, but what can you do, but just learned from Greg below that this Babe was the home plate ump for Don Larsen's perfect game Bubbles Hargrave - 1926 NL Batting Champ (The 1st catcher to lead the NL in batting average) Pete Donohue Carl Mays (beaned/killed Ray Chapman in 1920) Red Lucas Wally Pipp (famous for obvious reasons, right Lou?) YANKEES: HOFer Waite Hoyt Bob Meusel - batted 5th behind Gehrig and Ruth, member of Murderers Row 1920-1930 - led AL in HR's 1925 (more than Ruth!!!) 2013 HOF Inductee Jacob Ruppert (Owner of the Yankees - Got Ruth, then got rid of Ruth) HOFer M.J. "Miller" Huggins (Died in 1929 at age 51) HOFer Casey Stengel - no connection to these teams and signed in a different pen, so I'm sure his auto was obtained later then the 1927 date on the ball But "5" HOFers!!!!!! and such a unique collection of personalities, each with a story. Great looking ball, nice condition overall. The Huggins is light but he isn't usually available at that price. Goes to show there still are good buys in the autograph world on eBay to those who put the time in to find them. Congrats.

Great ball, Paul.
Interesting to know, 'Babe' Pinelli's claim to fame was his role in Larsen's perfect game - he was the home plate ump! Graig

Thanks Greg for the info, did not know that, I added it above. And thanks all!!!
I like that it has 2 great HOF New York managers Huggins and Stengel, probably not many of that combo on balls out there, especially since Hug died in '29. One the manager of what most consider the best team of all time, the '27 Yanks, the other the manager of what many consider the worst team of all time, the '62 Mets. I also like the Huggins-Ruppert combo, the 2 men who battled with Ruth on and off the field. Pipp, the most famous replaced player of all time. The 1919 Black Sox tie in with Luque, who also played with and managed many great negro leaguers. And of course Mays and the Ray Chapman beanball incident. And now from Greg the 1956 Larson Perfecto tie in. And Ruppert goes into the Hall this summer 2013. It's a history of the game all on one ball. Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 03-23-2013 at 04:46 PM. |

Great pickup - the Ruppert on a ball is rare, and now much more in demand.
Keating may purchase at a nice profit from you, if selling is a route youd like to go. |

Paul--
Interesting ball with some nice examples of great names--the apparent later addition of Stengel may spoil interest for some collectors and adds to the challenge of assessing its value--probably best potential for you would be realized by putting it in a different (than ebay) auction where you will hopefully find two or more collectors to compete for it. Congratulations on a nice pick up and good luck with it!--Kevin (Keating) |
