I know it's not hi-grade, but I am pretty excited. I am going for low/mid/ex 54 Topps set, now only need 7 more that aren't commons, they just happen to be big ones...
![]() What's everyone else getting?

I have been searching for this card for over a year. Finally found it and at a great price. Could not be happier. And, this was the last card I needed to complete my run of Topps Mantle Cards (minus the rarer test issues and one of the 52 Topps variations). Nice to finally check this off the list.

The tattoos were spelled "tattoo" in 1960 and "tatoo" in 1964. This is a 1960 issue. Topps produced five total for Mantle: 1. 1960 Topps Tattoo Mantle Portrait (pictured); 2. 1960 Topps Tattoo Mantle Auto-ball (just a ball with a facsimile signature); 3. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Yellow Band; 4. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Red Triangle (red packaging); and 5. 1964 Topps Tatoo Mantle Red Triangle (yellow packaging). I was fortunate and was able to grab this off of Clean Sweep Auction's latest auction. I have only seen one on eBay in the last year and really wanted this to round out my set.

Really nice looking 61 cards Broby. If you are getting those off ebay...I apologize as I was probably bidding against you a couple times the past few months. Just got a renewed interest in collecting since about September and have focused on pre-1975 PSA, BVG, or SGC 6-7's of HOF's, minor stars, and Dodgers(willing to go down to 4.5's for pre 1961, and down to 3's for major HOF's cards in the 50's).
1961 just happens to be one of the easier years to find decent shape cards. I have been able to pick up several cards, including a few at monster discounts...in particular a 61 Reds Heavy Artillery PSA 6.5, well centered and a PSA 6.5 Frank howard for basically chump change. Also a really pretty PSA 7 Bob Gibson(not for chump change lol), 7 Curt Flood, and a nice 6 McCovey and 6 Cepeda. The only one that cost over $10 was the Gibson. I did get kinda screwed on a BVG 6 Robin Roberts that has some kind of wierd staining and print marks or mold or something. I dunno how it got a grade of six as the markings really do detract from the card. Oh well, thats what happens when you win with a $2 or $3 bid. |

Great cards, guys. Jason I really like the Frank Robinson. The '73 Topps set seems to be mentioned often in discussions of least favorite sets, yet I love it. And it's amazing to me how many discussions of all-time greats tend to overlook Frank Robinson. Nearly 600 HRs, MVPs in both leagues, 57 hits shy of 3,000. There's no reason for it. He should be up there with Aaron, Mays, Mantle et all.

The 73 F Robby is one of my favorite cards. I remember pulling it from a pack
in 1973 with snow on the ground, after my mom brought home a pack from the grocery store. I called my friend who lived down the road to tell him baseball cards were in the stores. He 1 upped me later in the week, when a family friend who owned a gas station and had access to wholesale markers got him either a vending box or a wax box. Either way, he had fun at age 10 busting that whole box. |

So why did they change it back and forth over time, intentional or careless mistake ?

Thanks John, I'm sure you're not the first Net 54 member I've come up against in my travels, no doubt not that last! I recently finished a '56 set and jumped into this one. I'm about 70% done with my set, buying both graded and raw. I have also found it a bit easier to get '61's in nice condition, much eaiser than other cards from the late '50's and early '60's. The card stock they used that year was some real sturdy stuff. One other thing is that wax is easy to remove from these cards so I've been able to get some great deals on cards with stains and remove them with relative ease (speaking of the card front only). Are you going for 100% graded set? PS - Always liked the heavy artillery card, great title. Last edited by brob28; 02-04-2013 at 08:46 PM. Reason: add comments |

Bill---the Push Pull set was 1965, and like the 3 Hocus Focus /Magic Photo issues, the Who Am I issue, the Great American Stamp issue, the Scoops issue, and others, it was not limited to baseball. It had 36 subjects, only 3 of which involved baseball
The 60s were the heart of the Golden Era for both issued and unissued Topps test issues, which ended in the early 70s |

I picked this up last week. If I get it authenticated do you guys think I should go through PSA or SGC? I've never used SGC before. Should I just authenticate it or get the card graded as well? I appreciate your thoughts...

It's great that SGC is into authenticating autos now, but I have concerns over who is doing it. It's not enough to say "hey, we're doing this now" if the people behind the scenes have somewhat questionable skills.
Mike Root was Director of Authentication at James Spence, and I've read several horror stories as to the accuracy of JSA's "opinions". Authenticating signatures that were later deemed forgeries, autographs obtained in person being opined as a fake. It doesn't matter how many autographs this person has purchased over the years. What matters is the accuracy with which each individual autograph is considered. I don't want to pay somebody $50 bucks for an auto on a $1,000 card if they're just going to look at it and say "ya, that looks right". For the authentication to be accurate, the signature in question should be compared to known, authenticated examples. They need to be looking at the signature under magnification, and I just don't know if this service is spending the time necessary. The important thing to remember is that when you pay for this service, you are purchasing an opinion. I know that people on Ebay think that having a PSA/DNA, or a JSA authentication is a gold mine. All I'm saying is exercise caution. Never has the phrase "caveat emptor" been more appropriate.
