Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to vintage collecting, but am a long time collector. I just recently traded away all my remaining modern cards for a 51 Bowman Mantle, so I figure my collection is now 100% vintage and a vintage forum is where I belong.
I've owned some cards from the 30's and 40's but have, like most, fallen in love with the t-206 set and want to get started. I have the opportunity to buy a Ty Cobb Green Portrait with a Piedmont back, factory 25. The card is raw and while from a reliable source, I still would like to do my due diligence and get some other opinions on its authenticity (I realize its just a picture, but your initial thoughts are valuable). I apologize for the poor quality photos, but this is all I have until I can view the card in person (don't worry, not purchasing until I examine in person). I definitely appreciate all the experience on this board and hope I can add to the expertise as I learn more. Thanks in advance for the help!!! - Trey ![]() ![]() Last edited by chipperhank44; 02-13-2013 at 06:41 AM. |

hard to tell for sure from that scan/photo...but card looks authentic to me...but I'd suspect edges/corners have been trimmed. I'd only purchase with contingency that card could be returned if it does not receive a grade...otherwise pay accordingly.

Thanks Peter, possibly an agreement that lays out payment for the card if it grades and payment for the card if it simply comes back "A". That seems like a fair way to do it, thanks for the advice!
I did take a look at the post on this site about detecting trimmed T-206 cards, that will definitely come in handy when examining the card under magnification. Thanks for the welcome Steve, glad to be here! |

Welcome to the site. Hope you enjoy it. The card looks fine from the scan but as was said, sometimes a tiny alteration/trimming can't be seen. A lot of us will ask a seller for a guarantee of a numerical tpg grade (any grade but it has to be numerical) to quell our nerves. If a seller won't give that guarantee then you have to make the choice with the associated risk. I have bought before with no guarantee and been fine but of course I prefer one. Most hobby folks will give one. A lot of out-of-the-hobby folks might not.

Card looks authentic to me as well, but I don't like the bottom edge. I guess it could be a wavy scan/image, but it stood out to me from that scan.

Authentic. Possibly trimmed at the bottom though.

I would not buy a high $$ card like that raw. If it's not trimmed it would be slabbed I think.

Card has either been trimmed on the top and bottom or has bends

Thanks for all the help. I am going to continue my search for something graded or a seller willing to offer me payment based on grading outcome. I've been a member for a day and you guys have already saved me money!
