I have a question on the W516-1 set. I have a couple cards that have the words RSAL "BASE BALL MATCHING CARDS" printed in top border. Does anyone have or know what the first word(s) is on the strip???? It seems to me it would be the name of the company or printer "...RSAL". The W516-1 is also known without the words as well as seen in the bottom card. |

my guess would be that the partial word is UNIVERSAL. No idea what might be before that though |

they made some sheets with the name, some without. There is a baseball set and a boxing set and some nonsports too. They are pretty nice for strip cards. I just picked up a Fatty Arbuckle. |

Looks like it's probably Universal Toy and Novelty Company of New York, who (as Adam said) made a variety of cards during the pre-war era |

My father played baseball in Okinawa (spelling) after the war and his manager was Benny Kauf who was there under another name. He was supposedly hiding out from the feds for some reason. |

Are W516s with "Universal" printed across the top, more or less desirable?
Thanks! |

Thanks Leon. A fellow collector has a Tris Speaker with Universal neatly printed across the top. He had no idea of the significance.

It would add a few dollars to the value. Sort of significant but not too uncommon.

Interesting that a 516-1 and 516-1-2 (as well as 516-2-2) should have the position and team name in the line below the player's name. Standard Cat and OldCardboard say they should be 2-1/2, 2-3/8 (2-1/4) respectively. It is hard enough to get examples that fit those dimensions without cutting off the position and team line, which often happened. When you add the Universal tag on the top they are rather vertically 'oversized'! Then, on top of that, they added the IFC designation again on top of that. That would be close to 3" by the time you add all that into your cut of the card. Having an example of the card in full height with all the lines intact is quite impressive.
