From the title of this auction, a lot longer ago than I would have imagined...

While I am pretty certain Ed's note was tongue-in-cheek to point out that lame eBay seller's description, it is a valid point to ponder...
I assume collectors in J.Burdick's days didn't have toploaders, penny sleeves or screwdowns. I recall getting a binder for my cards in 1974, with cheesy plastic sheets in it. The binder was great for this 12 year old, except it didn't hold enough of my budding card collection...I still needed the Keds or Converse boxes. The binder had team logos all over, so it was associated with MLB in some manner. i don't remember any card supplies or protection prior to that year. Anyone else have supply history memories?

That holder is a good way to keep those corners nice and rounded

When I found my 1972 Topps set in about 1990, it was in a shoe box with rubber bands around each series, so I guess my holders when I was 11 were rubber bands.

An interesting yet pointless collection would be to collect all the different kinds of card holders that have been made.

I'm not sure but I have always heard that the reason Carter, Nagy etc. had caramel pre-WW1 cards which were trimmed was because collectors back in the day trimmed the caramel cards to fit in to "holders" designed for T206 size tobacco cards...

Yes, I'm crazy. I bought the same binder mentioned in 74. Still have it, but I haven't used it in years. We had a thread about hobby supplies a while back. Lots of good info there. Steve B |

My earliest hobby recollections were from the late 70's. Back then, I had 9 pocket, side-loading pages, made from good old PVC...practically guaranteed to turn yellow over a relatively short time. I also had pages to fit 1952-56 Topps.
I don't remeber seeing penny sleeves and top loaders until the very early 80's. I believe a '52 Mantle sold at auction for $3,000 in or around 1980 and started the collecting boom that soon saw Card Shops opening up everywhere. Larger selection of supplies following soon thereafter makes sense to me.

So, basically, it's so impressive that PSA 9s and 10s even exist from the 60s and earlier. Crazy!
