Hi Phil,
I just searched for our friend, Mr. Hulbert and I only found the same image with a half dozen different border designs. While on the search, I was looking for info on Dude Esterbrook. Someone posted about his tragic demise. And of course, I looked for Ed Delehanty. There certainly are some bizarre ends to some great BB players from those early days. |

I've never seen another image of Hulbert either. Kind of strange, considering his prominence.

I keep thinking of the Ken Burns PBS documentary concerning Hulbert and possible images used. I knew Dennis Goldstien from Atlanta way, way back. I understood that much of his collection was used on the early parts and Dennis REALLY did have some fantastic memorabilia and cards. Decades later, I imagine that collection like so many others are gone, broken up, etc.., I wonder if Bob Lemke has other images. He's my buddy and I love his blog! He basically has been scouring vintage Sporting News issues and putting some fantastic stories together about the players depicted on the cards we love so much! Have fun guys, let's keep looking and while we're at it try to add Dude Esterbrooke to our list! |

Hi Bill- Dennis Goldstein's collection was sold by Leland's about 20 years ago. Don't know if he rebuilt it afterwards, but I do remember all the great things he had.

Hi Barry,
As usual, it's always a pleasure reading your posts and chatting with you. I was 15 when I met Dennis. I was starting to sell cards to finance my collection at the Grafton, MA Flea Market, and Dennis was "touring New England", buying EVERYTHING! I was always a card guy, but Dennis was way ahead of those days (the early-mid 70's), and he was buying all types of really cool, interesting and simply fantastic memorabilia. I had a gold pocket watch from 1888 with the Boston players around the dial in absolute gorgeous working order. (It was a gift from Mom & Dad for my Birthday and my perfect SAT scores, lol!) Dennis wanted it, but I wasn't intersted in selling it. Years later, a collector from NJ attending Law School up here and I became friends. I eventually sold it to Steve Mitnick. He was a true collector, and like Dennis, ahead of his time. Guys like Dennis and Steve would laugh at my T206 obsession trying to get every player with every back. Man, Barry, those were truly the days! I wasn't even old enough to drive and the minute we'd get to a show, guys would literally line up to sell me stacks of T cards. They were plentiful and they were cheap and I had a blast! Barry, I really want to thank you for your posts and not just this one. It's always great to read what you and our other hobby icons have to say! Thanks for making my day....AGAIN! Your Friend, Bill |

Thanks Bill. I do enjoy reminiscing about the old days in the hobby, although I think you may go back even a little further than I do.
