I'm sure this has been discussed several times before on these boards, but I couldn't find a thread that focused on it in the archives. I'm interested in hearing some guesses on how many of these still exist. I've seen estimates of 50-100, and while 100 seems high, 50 seems a lot more reasonable. With finds like the e98 Black Swamp Find, it makes me wonder if there are other raw copies of the T206 Wagner out there somewhere under a doll house.
Here are the numbers I could track down using some obvious sources: SGC - Sweet Caporal = 10 PSA - Sweet Caporal = 10 PSA - Misc Backs (ie. Piedmont or SC) = 22 total that I can account for = 42 Are there any in BVG or GAI holders? Would you guys guess that there are still raw examples out there?

Let's put it this way....it's by far the most common Wagner tobacco card.

there was one slabbed by beckett and one by gai but i think the gai one has been reslabbed by someone else now. there are at least 65 known wagners, maybe even a few more that are known and documented, so the real numbers is probably closer to 75 or so. its as good as guess as anyone can come up with as not all of them are slabbed or accounted for. a few are lying low.
if i am way off let me know. Last edited by travrosty; 07-12-2012 at 02:22 PM. |

Thanks for the reply, guys. It's amazing to think about a card like that remaining raw. I'd be curious to know if there are any high grade examples yet to be graded.

Yes, there are still high end Wagners out there that haven't been graded. A lot of the old time collectors are not big fans of TPG.

Think of it a different way. The card themselves have been around for over 100 years, collectors have been around for nearly the same amount of time, and professional grading has only been around for 10-15 years. Anyone who had a Wagner for 20+ years may not feel the need to get the card graded to remain in their personal collection. m |

sorry for the double post.
the burdick wagner at the Metropolitan is in pretty good shape, it is pasted on a sheet, so they don't know how much back damage there would be if they took it off. they did comment, however, that the paste is water soluble and it might be possible to dissolve it and take the card off the sheet with minimal damage. so that wagner is in fairly good shape and unslabbed and ungraded. |

Though this won't produce an exact answer to your question, it will provide tracking of a number of sales of Wagners and provide a look at how often certain examples have changed hands: http://www.t206resource.com/WagnerSales.html Rob Last edited by Rob D.; 07-12-2012 at 03:08 PM. |

I just read Jim B.'s article on the Cobb/Cobb back. Excellent analysis, well balanced, and well researched.
Now back to Wagner. |

There is a raw, authentic Wagner placed in the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is owned by Ken Kendrick, owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks. I was able to see it, along with his other beautiful raw t206's last weekend when I went there.

That's a cool resource, Rob - thank you for posting the link. And I appreciate all of the other responses. It's incredible what the hype behind this card can do for sales prices. Don't get me wrong, it's a great card - and I'd obviously love to be one of the lucky owners, as well.
