with all the raw/slabbed talk and cracking graded cards discussion...i'm curious what's the highest dollar amount card you've cracked from a slab?
personally however i buy a card it remains in that state whether raw/graded...it doesn't get graded or cracked unless there's a reason to do so. |

Highest grades? A PSA 5 and an SGC 30. Both commons. Probably most valuable? Young/glove shows that had been an SGC 20.

1990 Donruss Sammy Sosa PSA 2.
I was worried at first...especially about getting those sharp pieces in my eye, but was able to get it out while only bending two of the corners. It's now in a GAI 4 holder. Going to the B/S/T soon. Rob |

This is the highest value slabbed card that I've ever cracked that had a potential to go down in grade (because of chipping or size requirements). It did, but then upon re-cracking, it went up. I've cracked a higher value card that was already a beater, so I knew it would get a Poor in the new holder anyway. Obviously, since I'm a slab proponent, I would never crack and leave the card raw permanently.

i have cracked plenty of E cards...
but it was for crossing over only! never to leave them cold and bare... not too smart to send in a slabbed card as a crossover for obvious reasons... |

Ive cracked a few Fan Craze 7's from their plastic tomb as the highest graded; several 34 goudeys including a couple deans and a foxx. I busted out my psa 2 '53 topps mantle and mays. I broke open my psa2 t200 tiger card...i think it was psa 2? I love the sound of the "pop" and holding my card for the first time...just like a kid!

have cracked around 100 pre-war slabs - mostly T206s, T205s, E121s etc that I've put into binder pages. Most expensive probably in the $500 area, though on average the value is around $30 per card. Most were lower grade anyway and I've kept the slips just in case.
My 1914 CJs are both raw and slabbed, however I purchased them. And any Lionel Carter cards I've purchased remain in their slabs for the neat "provenance" factor. Rob ![]() Last edited by tiger8mush; 05-10-2012 at 05:40 PM. |

Originally submitted to PSA and it was sent back EOT. Submitted to SGC with result as shown. Sent back to PSA to try to cross which failed. (I'll never do that again!) Cracked it and resubmitted to PSA. Both the highest grade and most valuable card I have cracked. I think the card appears to be a higher grade in the SGC holder IMO.

Thanks Jeff.....that is one of those cards that isn't scarce but it's not easy to find a nice eye appeal one that doesn't cost a ton. I got it at the first Oaks show I did. Bryan Dec had it in his case and as soon as I saw it I wanted it....but I had no cash. Bryan and I got to talking and he saw a set of Sawyer Biscuits I had in my case and he told me he forgot to bid on them in the auction I won them from. We ended up working a trade and I couldn't have been happier. I had been looking for a nice one that wouldn't break the bank for several years. Sevens are a ton of money and most 5s-6s just didn't quite have the eye appeal I was looking for. I personally think the T205 Cobby is one of the best looking cards in the hobby. I know you have a very nice one too. I don't crack too many cards but I have cracked quite a few GAI ones....Even if they aren't tainted, as long as they are in a GAI holder they are... regards

E93, how do you do that so cleanly? I have to beat the heck out of the edges, with sharp plastic edges flying everywhere. My wife and kids know what's up when I go to the garage with a card case, hammer, and goggles, "don't come out here." Probably like the guy in breaking bad...
Broke out a PSA 8 '74 Schmidt in the late 90's, resubmitted and got a PSA 9. Card was approx 40.00 in an 8 at the time, but I found that it was 430.00 in a 9. One of those things that helps hopefully break even in the end I guess. Anyway, that was my most expensive card that wasn't so expensive at the time. |

I have done very well sending in PSA slabbed cards to SGC for crossover. My best example was a PSA 4 T206 Cobb Bat On Shoulder with weak corners but otherwise clean than SGC put in an SGC 60 holder. In my view, SGC at least is not persuaded by the number on the PSA holder and will give your card a fair shake either way.

I use needle nose pliers to snap off a corner (or two), then slide a screw driver in to separate the two sides.

Cracked a PSA 4 Demmitt, St. Louis and a BVG 2 Magie for the sole reason of putting them in my album set. The pages are only big enough for the card. The Demmitt was $3600 and The magie was around $9000. Just do it.

in some instances the slab actually hurts the card's value.

Actually the Magie was BVG, so I didn't crack it. I sawed the bottom off with a hacksaw and used a flat screw driver to pry it open. I hate BVG holders. I am pretty sure any company would give it a 2 so had no problem with opening it.

I can break out a PSA or SGC holder with my ol' oyster knife and hammer tap. BUT those BVG holders, oh boy, yeah, a hacksaw and pliers work, but a welders torch is probably the best way to go ![]() Once cracked a T207 Saier PSA 2, reholder it for sale and got a SGC 40. ![]() Also a PSA 1 E107 common (forget who), and sold raw. I hate to admit it, but I once cracked out a "Nagy Collection" card (E77 Al Kaufmann) it was a 3 or 4. ![]() |
